I am looking for a solar filter that would fit my 10" Orion Dob at a reasonable price, any ideas?
I have 125mm squares of Baader AstroSolar Film. They are $4 a piece. You can make an off-axis filter for your 10" Dob using cardboard and this film. Here is a link to instructions on how to build the filter cell. http://www.baader-planetarium.com/sofifolie/bauanleitung_e.htm Thanks, David Dunn -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of william baker Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2012 12:35 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Solar Filter I am looking for a solar filter that would fit my 10" Orion Dob at a reasonable price, any ideas? _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club. Mark, if you are interested, I'll show you the Baader filters I made for my 70mm and 80mm binos. I could bring them to L&O.
sounds great. I have a 100mm bino and would like to make filters for it. Mark Shelton Indian Hill Middle School Tech Ed. One of these days I'm going to finish my heavy-duty parallelogram for my Apogee 100mm binos, then I'll have to make a set for that one, too.
I was contacted by the Astronomical League to help a local astronomer's wife whose husband recently died of a massive heart attack at age 52. He left her with two very nice telescopes including a very nice 12.3" Dob, complete with built in cooling fans, a Magellan Star finder and other nice options. The custom wood working is very nice, very clean and obviously done by a pro. They also have a clean Meade 127 Cat, stock condition and in good shape with tripod and hand controller. The widow, Beckie, is looking to sell the whole lot for $1,900. If you are interested please contact me and I will get you in touch with Beckie, who lives in Roy, to take a look at the equipment. I have seen the equipment and it is all in good shape. Her husband, Mickey Davis, obviously cherished and took care of his scopes. Mickey was also a member of OAS for at least a while. Here is a list of what they are looking to sell. - Telescope, 12.5 Dob with Magellan Star Finder, customer made mount, very clean, very good condition, obviously well taken care of - Telescope, Meade 127 Cat, good shape - EPs: 30mm 2" QX - EP: 14mm 1.25 Ultra wide - EP: 8.8 mm 1.25 Ultra wide - EP: 18MM Wide angle - EP: 26 MM Plossel (Meade) - EP: Orion Epic 5.1 - Meade Camera adapter - Meade, "My Sky" Handheld star finder Contact me and I will get you in touch with Beckie to see the equipment. She will probably be willing sell it off in pieces but would prefer to sell the lot as is. I think it is a good deal for $1,900. Robert Taylor robtaylorslc@comcast.net 801 599-3925
If you are wanting one for the Solar Eclipse making one may be the only option.
Manufacturers are backed up due to the upcoming eclipse and are saying up to 4 weeks before shipment. I have 125mm squares of Baader AstroSolar Film. They are $4 a piece. You

You could go with something like this - http://www.optcorp.com/product.aspx?pid=10814&kw=Baader%20film&st=2 - for $120, but you don't need (or probably want) a full aperture filter for a 10". Dave's 125mm filter (which is a SWEET price, by the way) put in an off-axis cell made from a few dollars of supplies (I found foam core board instead of cardboard worked better) will work great. This will give you a 4.5" or so of aperture, which should be adequate. As I learned the hard way, you want to make sure you get the visual film, and NOT the photographic film (unless it's for photography ONLY!), otherwise you can permanently damage your eyes. If you go with photographic film, a full-aperture filter will be WAY too bright. I suspect Baader film will quickly become expensive and difficult to find. Bill, I purchased a sheet of Baader film (I think from OPT) and laminated between two 10" donuts I cut from black foam core board. I then made a ring to fit around my 10" LX-200 OT out of black poster board. I used two layers of the poster board laminated together with rubber cement. I then attached this to the foam core with black electrical tape. It looks good and a full-aperture baater filter produces a very good image. I made this for under $25. Thanks Rodger C.
