I got some decent smartphone shots right before sunset. Will post links when I get them processed and uploaded. Whew! On Jun 5, 2012 7:08 PM, "Patrick Wiggins" <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

I had about 30 minutes no clouds. About ten neighbors visited to see the spectacle. I was impressed with how big Venus was. I expected it to be smaller for some reason. We also compared the view through my #14 welders glass with eclipse glasses. The welders glass gave a far sharper image. Venus was almost not discernible through the glasses but it was very obvious through the glass. ________________________________
My view also. We had just over 35 minutes of viewing until the Sun set into low clouds. I also expected Venus to be smaller, probably for the same reason. The view was also better through a glass filter than through the solar glasses. I ended up giving away 80-90 pair. Sig On Tue, Jun 5, 2012 at 9:14 PM, Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com> wrote:

Venus was so small against the sun that I couldn't see it with solar glasses on, although I knew exactly where to look -- I could see and photograph it easily through my camera/telephoto, which had a glass filter. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Siegfried Jachmann <siegfried@jachmann.org> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 5, 2012 11:07 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Seeing it My view also. Venus' size surprised me too. Much bigger than I thought it would be. In fact, when the Sun first broke free of the clouds I was still westbound on I-80 and not wanting to stop I pulled out my welder's glass and glanced through it and was surprised at how easy Venus was to see. Funny but I came up on a car that had pulled off on the shoulder. When I went by the driver was using binoculars to look at the Sun through his windshield. Then when I stopped at exit 77 and started setting up a number of other cars stopped too. patrick On 05 Jun 2012, at 23:07, Siegfried Jachmann wrote:

Just before the sun set I had a perhaps 2 minute glimpse of a very reddened sun with a perfectly round blemish on it. As it started to disappear behind a cloud I noticed a green fringe on the upper limb. Aha! Green flash time! I had a couple of neighbors still at the scope and so I showed it to them, and explained what the green flash is. Just as the last vestige of the sun ducked behind the cloud, sure enough, a bit of a green flash greeted us. They saw the flash too, but had never heard of it before. That was the first time I had seen a green flash while the sun set behind a cloud. That was a double solar treat. About 30 minutes later we were treated to an "OK" view of Saturn and Mars. Overall, a good night for introducing new things. The neighbors were thinking about a telescope, and are now becoming more serious. They have always been interested in Astronomy, and have a very good basic knowledge of astronomical principles. Soon that will be augmented with more observational knowledge.
After waiting for hours for a break in the clouds, my wife & I went south a bit and wound up at a playground in Daybreak. We set up the Dob on the side of the road and was able to see the sun and Venus quite clearly with only sporadic clouds passing by. Most people drove by and just stared at us with that wide eyed what-do-you-think-your-doing look in their eyes. A science teacher from Lehi, Utah stopped by and asked if he and his wife could take a look. After explaining about SLAS, he indicated that he would like to approach the organization about requesting a star party at his school. Welder's glass works great. I was surprised that Venus stayed in the upper-right-hand quadrant of the sun from when I first saw it, just after four until the sun set. What's up with that. I expected the planet to cross the sun in a diagonal appearing manner.

The view is also rotating with respect to the earth making it appear to stay in that location. Sig On Tue, Jun 5, 2012 at 10:25 PM, WAYNE S CLARKE <waynesclarke@msn.com>wrote:

I left the NHMU event at about 6pm with some friends, bound for Lakeside if we needed to go that far. We stopped at Grantsville and had acceptable conditions. Mostly clear skies with a couple of cloud bands that made for some interesting viewing. A couple of folks came and joined our party, my 8" dob and 1 Chuck Hards Sunspotter providing the wow factor, well only two-thirds of the wow factor that could've been, since I FORGOT to bring my newly-made-lastnight solar filter for my recently acquired 80mm. Ugh. Great times overall, thanks to everyone who participated at the NHMU event and to Steve for all his hard work! I initially regretted not going to St. George or really anywhere south, but after having an opportunity to introduce a couple of friends to astronomy by seeing a last-chance event like this, it was worth it. I'll post some pics in a bit, but I just had to vent my excitement! On Tue, Jun 5, 2012 at 10:25 PM, WAYNE S CLARKE <waynesclarke@msn.com>wrote:
