Have there been any plans for a SLAS swap meet at SPOC this year as we’ve done in the past? And, would anyone object if I were to post on Utah Astronomy a list of items that I wish to sell? Kim
I have not heard any talk of a swap meet. Maybe we could hold one before the start of the Stansbury Day star party on the 21st. Feel free to post for sale notices. patrick On Aug 12, 2010, at 15:31, "Kim" <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:

Probably too short notice for the 21st (I'm supposed to be installing bathroom tile), but I would be interested in a swap-meet soon. It's been a couple of years, at least, hasn't it? I remember the one SLAS did in conjunction with the OAS, some years ago in Roy. That one was nice. On 8/12/10, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

The 21st might be a bit short but how's about the evening of the 28th, just before and during the evening's SPOC star party? With that much time perhaps OAS and UVAA could be invited. Opinions? PATRICK On 18 Aug 2010, at 00:19, Chuck Hards wrote:

The 28th works for me, as of today at least, I'll check with the family CEO. The only other issue I might have is having enough room in the car for sale items as well as the telescope I'd be using at the star party, lol. On 8/18/10, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

As it turns out, we have a previous engagement for the evening of the 28th. A late-day affair coasting into a star party won't work for me. Noon-3ish would work that day. Swap meet/sun party, maybe? But don't scuttle it on my account.
I don't see an early afternoon start time working as that would mean having to stick around too many hours to do the swap meet and then the star party. Let's put off the swap meet until a better day can be chosen. Clear skies, patrick On 18 Aug 2010, at 20:58, Chuck Hards wrote:

I've got a number of non-astronomy items that I'm looking to let go of, including WWI themed posters, as well as model kits. Any interest in such items? Also some astronomical and Sci-Fi themed posters, books, etc., not just hardware and optics. I have an autographed copy of Bert Willard's bio of Russell W. Porter that I may part with... the non-personalized one, I also have a first edition that Bert made out to me. :o) Yeah, I'm special, lol. I have a first edition copy of "A Fall of Moondust" (with dust jacket) with one of Arthur C. Clarke's PERSONAL, signed bookplates tipped-in, that isnt really for sale, but if someone waved five or six grand under my nose, I'm sure beads of sweat would break-out on my brow... And, oh, yes, I also have another of Sir Arthur's personal, signed bookplates that may be brought out for drooling purposes... but no, the letter that Sir Arthur wrote to ME, Chuck Hards, PERSONALLY, is most definitely NFS... (we bad, we bad...lol) I'm such a stinker. ;o)
Jealous, indeed! And of course all that stuff sounds definitely like it would be well worth a look to say the least. Yes, I bought (and have) the Protostar tube and secondary (bought the rings and end-caps too). I'm trying to decide on a color (leaning toward metallic green) to have my son-in-law (an auto-body painter) do it justice (he brought over a book with hundreds of color samples, and now there are too many choices to make an easy decision!). Will likely go with a Wyorock focuser (if I can get them to answer their e-mails!), and the UO mirror cell is the likely culprit unless someone can talk me into something better. Funds are tight still, but hopefully sometime in the coming few months I'll obtain the remaining parts and then with luck Mr. Hards can find some time to help me design and implement a simple mount, and put this little beast together...? /R --- On Wed, 8/18/10, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Rich, I know it may be too low-tech for your project, but my full-thickness 10-inch Parks mirror has been in a plywood and silicone sealant mirror cell for more than 20 years with "stellar" performance. Never have I seen any adverse affect from this simplest of mirror cells. The silicone holds the mirror just fine (or at least it has for 20+ years) with just enough flexibility not to torque the glass from thermal expansion or other stresses. I've always wondered how well it would work with thinner mirrors, though. Anyway, good luck with your project. Where's Kenneth Novak when you need him? My only gripe about using silicone is that it's an all-day process to remove and re-attach the mirror should cell repairs or a good cleaning be required. Three tiny edge clips are just too easy, IMO. If kept small enough, no diffraction effects are noticed. On 8/19/10, Kim <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:

I don't know about repairs - never had to. The 3/4" plywood I used was scrap CDX. If I were to do it again, I'd use marine grade plywod. Still, I sealed and painted it well before adhering the mirror, and I don't hesitate to even dip it in water to clean the mirror, which I haven't done for maybe 10 years, anyway. I think the key to easy removal of the cell, if needed, is to gap the mirror and plywood with some kind of shim when using the silicone. Then a saw blade can easily be slipped between the cell and mirror to remove it. I used three dollops of silicone, maybe 3/4" in diameter. Never regretted it. Kim, that's great if it works for you, I have no doubt of it's ease and utility. But I will never go the silicone route. No need. Nor plywood, for that matter. Again, no need. To each, his own. A fellow on the ATM list once put it very well. He said, essentially, that, and I'm paraphrasing him here, that "you build a telescope from plywood to use in your own lifetime. You use more durable materials if you want your great-grandchildren to use it." That was Mr. Frank Ward. I will always remember it. On 8/19/10, Kim <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:

Yes, I'm LOL. But, have you seen Bridget lately (or rather, images of her)? In my opinion she failed the test a long time ago. I was also fond of Gina Lollabrigida and Sophia Loren, both of whom are still beautiful. I think the Italians are better looking than the French, and having lived in Italy and visited France, I know I'm right. ;-) Kim -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Joe Bauman Sent: Thursday, August 19, 2010 5:27 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Warning! I am thinking there was some gazing at prominences!
I'm on my way!

The last time I was in Ibiza (Spanish Mediterranean Island) the beaches were filled with sun worshipers and I do mean total sun worshipers and they werenât looking at prominences.

Remember, Rodger, extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof -- I expect you to post a few beach photos!

I have to agree about Italian women and will have to check it out when I visit there over the next two weeks. But lets not discount women from Spain.Â

FWIW: I agree with you, I've been to both Italy and France. There's just something about Italian women.

Yes, I'm LOL. But, have you seen Bridget lately (or rather, images of her)? In my opinion she failed the test a long time ago. I was also fond of Gina Lollabrigida and Sophia Loren, both of whom are still beautiful. I think the Italians are better looking than the French, and having lived in Italy and visited France, I know I'm right. ;-)

Would that be considered "bird" watching? ( I feel old now that I said that. I am sure younger people won't get the joke) ________________________________ From: Rodger C. I'm sure my fellow old-timers recall calling Ken Novak, and getting "grandma" on the phone. Wonderful old lady, but she knew nothing of optical supports. Oh, the memories! Right up there with getting cussed-out by Tom Cave, and falsely promised a delivery date by John Krewalk (Criterion). The Good Old Days! On 8/19/10, Kim <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:

I don't think that I ever did speak with Ken - I think grandma always took my orders. I bought a focuser, the old low-end 1-1/4" friction type (that worked just fine), and spiders, secondary holders and flat mirrors for two different Newts. Good old days indeed. Rich, I just bought a wyorock focuser a couple of weeks ago. Carolyn was very prompt in her replies to me. They even machined a custom base to fit my tube OD. This is my third wyorock, I love them. Did you use: wyorock@comcast.net ? Also, she has one listed on eBay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160469922573&ru=http%3A%2... Search for item 160469922573 if the link doesn't work. Only one day left on the auction, so hurry. You might want to consider a 2-speed focuser for that fast mirror, however. Your "sweet spot" for focus is very shallow and a reduction focuser would allow you to hit it much easier. My usual cutoff line for a single-speed focuser is f/5, although the wyoroc is so well-made that I use it on one f/4.54. On 8/19/10, Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:
Will likely go with a Wyorock focuser (if I can get them to answer their e-mails!),
Not official yet (I'm still waiting to hear back from the SLAS BOD). At this point I'm just looking to see if other clubs would be interested in participating. patrick On 18 Aug 2010, at 16:19, Richard Tenney wrote:
