Is anyone planning to observe/photograph Jupiter and the triple "eclipse" of Callisto, Io and Europa on the night of Jan 23/24? Thanks, Seth
According to Seth the event(s) will begin around 8pm and conclude around 4am. Now if we could only guarantee the weather. I'm surprised Siegfried isn't on top of this. :) If memory serves, there was a vigil held late in the night, starting around 2am when Ganymede (or was it Europa) passed in front of Io. A small group of dedicated observers showed up at his house to view the event through the Clark. I suppose now it they showed up, they'd be shot :) Still it was an memorable evening, not only for the fact that we actually saw it, but that it could be predicted, within a second or two of the actual transit. Great memory!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Seth Jarvis" <SJarvis@slco.org> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, January 11, 2015 2:55:25 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Jupiter Observing January 23/24? I have other plans that night. The other event was a shadow event. I think it was the shadow of Ganymede on Europa. On Jan 11, 2015 3:20 PM, "Joan Carman" <jcarman6@q.com> wrote:

That begins Friday night and dark skies aren't needed. I just might. Great target for hi-def video. On Jan 11, 2015 2:56 PM, "Seth Jarvis" <SJarvis@slco.org> wrote:

I am going to attempt to observe this. Being as it is in January, the weather may be (probably will be) an issue. I may attempt it from my hangar in Bountiful - that's where my scopes are. I think the seeing will also be better there than from my home. I can also use the hangar for a warming building, and for catching a few z's between critical times. Anyone care to join in on the fun? If I use my refractor, it looks like Jupiter would subtend about 144 pixels on my Sony A77 camera. That is not many. I may try an image or two, but will probably just observe visually. Brent, you need to use a barlow or powermate. The 144 pixels would be interesting but tiny. You need a bigger image at the focal plane. On Mon, Jan 12, 2015 at 4:21 PM, Brent Watson via Utah-Astronomy < utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

Yes, I know 144 pixels is small. I have a 2.4X barlow that would boost it to about 345 pixels - still pretty small. I don't have the right adapters for my camera at the present time. I am not sure this would be a reasonable time to get them either. I don't really have much need for them, and I won't be around town all that long. Brent, I'll gladly loan you one of my "universal" camera brackets and you can take some afocal shots with an eyepiece to boost the magnification. Just let me know and I'll bring it to work. You can swing-by before Friday and pick it up. On Mon, Jan 12, 2015 at 5:45 PM, Brent Watson via Utah-Astronomy < utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

btw., there is a warm-up event this Friday the 16th. Io and Europa with their shadows will be on Jupiter at the same time. OK, only 4 items not 5. Siegfried On Tue, Jan 13, 2015 at 11:01 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:
