Simpson Springs Campground Observing
I saw on the story of that missing West Valley mother and wife that her husband claims to have gone camping at Simpson Springs Campground. They searched and no trace of camping or her. Hope they find her. On another note I noticed that this area might also be a good observing spot come spring, summer and fall (perhaps winter but the road is dirt so one doesn't want to get stuck out there). If you go to this website http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/salt_lake/recreation/ camping/simspson_springs.html and look at the upper right at the Simpson Springs Map it shows on the map of the general area, north of the campground a gravel pit. I wonder if that are some of the other areas on the map would be good areas? Anyone ever observed out here? Thanks for the input in advance.
Hi Jay, I have observed at Simpson Springs campground and it's a great place. What makes it especially nice are the restroom and the large concrete pad outside the restroom, big enough for me to set up my gear without blocking the door or (excuse indelicacy) smelling anything unpleasant. A closer spot, without a restroom or pad, is the Pit 'n' Pole site. The drawback is that it's pretty easy to get a flat tire on the old Pony Express Route, and there's a steep scary grade shortly before Simpson Springs. Also, there's no cell coverage from Simpson Springs but there is about three and a half miles closer to SLC. I wouldn't try the route in the winter. But for summer I think it's a good place. -- Joe --- On Thu, 12/10/09, JayLEads <jayleads@gmail.com> wrote: From: JayLEads <jayleads@gmail.com> Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Simpson Springs Campground Observing To: "Utah-Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Date: Thursday, December 10, 2009, 9:33 PM I saw on the story of that missing West Valley mother and wife that her husband claims to have gone camping at Simpson Springs Campground. Jay: Simpson Springs may be far from the city lights but it is a favorite destination of a lot of people. It's hard to know who you will be sharing the ground with, maybe and entire troup of Cub Scouts or a half dozen rock hounds. All of them like to light bonfires after dark. Between the paved road and Simpson Springs there are dozens of places where you can pull off and be undisturbed in the dark. So it's not a problem of finding a good observing site, it's a problem of getting others to come with you with the same purpose in mind. DT --- On Thu, 12/10/09, JayLEads <jayleads@gmail.com> wrote:

Joe, Thanks, thought it would be ok and for the most part I try to keep in cell phone coverage but that isn't always possible. Did you have a lot of people out at Springs when you were there or did you go during the week to minimize impact? I know at Pit n Pole going out during the week is far better than a Friday or Saturday night. Do you have cell coverage when your at the Wedge Overlook? DT, Similar thoughts on the campground area, that is why I was thinking off the road or at the gravel pit that is out there. Yep, getting others to go to a spot is difficult, and for the most part I go alone unless I have one of a couple people contact me and we go together (which is a lot of fun). Has anyone gone up to Big Springs Park above Provo in the winter (ok spot for being close for Spring Summer and Fall though I like the Equestrian Park above it a little better)? I know the park is paved there (the Equestrian Parking lot above it is not) and just wondering how the park is during the winter, if it is worth trying (realizing that most of my winter observing is either outback on a 20x 10 rounded concrete pad)? I might try the Grantsville Reservoir if we have a bit of a dry spell, yet if not, the views from where I am at in Herriman aren't bad for a suburban location, perhaps that is the best for the winter time. I was went Simpson Springs once for observing and that time the only company were a couple of weird old wino redneck types who didn't stick around (thank goodness). Our AT&T cell reaches from the Wedge, where I go fairly often. There's a restroom too at the Wedge, but I don't camp right at the overlook because in nice weather there are usually a lot of ORV-users at the Wedge itself. However, there are a few really nice campgrounds before you get to the Wedge itself. I've never had a problem with other campers at those. If I need to use the restroom it's only a couple of miles away. -- Joe --- On Thu, 12/10/09, Jay Eads <jayleads@gmail.com> wrote: From: Jay Eads <jayleads@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Simpson Springs Campground Observing To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Date: Thursday, December 10, 2009, 10:54 PM Joe, Thanks, thought it would be ok and for the most part I try to keep in cell phone coverage but that isn't always possible.
