Oh, I forgot to mention for tonight. I am taking the XT10 (a 10 inch dob) from now on and if you don't own a scope and want to try star hopping I have a couple of extra eyepieces and an extra copy of The Pocket Sky Atlas and you can come out and run a scope and find a few objects on your own. It is really a great time to try this as I'll start you in Sagitarrius and have you find M22 a globular cluster, then the Lagoon Nebula, the Trifed Nebula, The Swan and Eagle Nebula and the Wild Duck Cluster. So if your wanting to try running a dobsonian the 10 inch will be out there for you and I'll be nearby if you need help. Great way to spend a summer evening. Jay On 2011-07-24 19:01, Jay Eads wrote:

What a great idea Jay! I'll join in on this idea also, so when I go observing I'll bring my 8" dob along for the same purpose. I also put together a hit list of objects for beginning observers to start with, so I'll be sure to bring copies of the "Hutchings' Nifty Fifty-Five" with me. This hit list is intended for neophyte observers who are looking for some structure and direction. Hi Joe, I'll post a full post on my blog in the next day or two but tonight was a wonderful night. Clear skies, lots of twinkle down low but at and around zenith, skies were steady. I got in a bunch of globulars from Ophiuchus that I needed and then got Stephen's Quintent, the Helix and some planetary nebula that I wanted to bag. What was really cool is as Jorge and I were out there setting up (I was finishing collimation) a very large male antelope walked up on the overgrown road that is next to the pit and goes to the main road and checked out Jorge and I out, and then he simply walked back toward the road. We both took pictures so hopefully they show up. No humidity to worry about out at the Pit tonight and I just got back so I am heading off to bed. Again, I'll do a full write up tomorrow. Hope your feeling better Joe. I had that stomach mess for 7 days and it wasn't fun. On Sun, Jul 24, 2011 at 10:13 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com>wrote:

Just got back from Lakeside. Nice night, got down to about 63 degrees for a low, so it was very comfortable. I'd call the seeing 3.5 at best, with some sporadic clouds on the western horizon when I got there about 9:30 pm, and more showing up and blowing across the sky as the night went on. My wife surprised me with a nice new kit of eyepieces (early birthday present!) right before we left, so I had a blast toying around with my new trinkets and my 8" dob. I'm a real hack, so I don't mind bad seeing conditions, I just like to get out of town. Went through all of my Messier favorites and got some nice time in with Saturn, Jupiter and the moon. I worked around Sagittarius and Cassiopeia alot, they're my big faves. I also spent some time with the area around Bode's Nebulae, very enjoyable with the new views from my birthday surprise. Someone brought a 3-car star party out. Other hacks I supposed, but at least they were courteous enough to turn the headlights off. The loudest members of the group didn't seem to know the difference between "Star Trek" and astronomy, and I don't think they were drinking anything stronger than orange soda, so I let them be. They all bailed about 12:30, just a few minutes before they would have had a nice view of rising Jupiter. Hope that wasn't anyone from the list here, and if it was, no offense intended :) Overall, I'd call it a 7.5/10 night. Then again, I always say a 4 at Lakeside beats a 9 in town.
