DayLight Savimgs Time
Hi All,
Nobody told my PC, in my observatory, that the rules changed for daylight savings time. Anyone know any downloads available to correct this? Did I mention a really dislike DayLight Savings Time. Erik

Thanks Howard,
I got it updated. I primarily use a Mac so I am very rusty with a PC. The only problem with Mac is that not much astronomical software is written for Apple. Gemini eludes that it will run off of Mac running Starry Night Pro. I will try it once I've got it runnimg from The Sky. Erik Try here:

Good luck!

There are these: Voyager http://www.carinasoft.com/voyager4 TheSkyX http://www.bisque.com/Products/TheSkyX/default.asp patrick
There are a few, I use Starry Night. Wasn't TheSkyX was released about 2 weeks ago? Does it have telescope control? I looked at it briefly, seemed on a par with the TheSky Student Edition.

Not sure when it was released. I received my copy only a few days ago. However, I've been running TheSky (as opposed to TheSkyX) for Mac for several years. No telescope control yet (though I believe Voyager offers that) but Software Bisque is rewriting all of their software to universal. I see on their web site that the next version of TheSkyX to be released will have telescope control. patrick
For what it is worth. I have had great luck with Starry night pro on my mac. I even have it controlling my Nexstar11 via a bluetooth serial setup from astrocables. I haven't even begun to use all of its features, but I find it very useful for planning and just becoming familiar with the night sky. Guess I am more of a visual person.... Quinton,
I also really like my Starry Night Pro, I like their star nomenclature, they name the stars more like my star charts. The Sky is a little harder to relate to in familiar terms particularly when it comes to double stars. I will try to run Gemini from it as it is almost identical to Meade LX systems. I have the PC hooked up now and it will save wear and tear on my Mac. The other problem comes when you use a CCD Camera my DSI needs windows. What do you use Patrick for your image processing? I would also recommend the Bryce Astronomy Festival. If you are not bringing a telescope our Astronomy Club is well represented there with a wide range of nice telescopes. Erik

I have not seen anyone mention xephem. It is written for the X windows system. It runs on Mac OS X as well as other UNIX/Linux platforms, and can even run on windows with sufficient help (e.g. cygwin/X). Graphically, it is not the fanciest by a long shot, but has capabilities other packages lack. I am able to isolate variables and graph them and solve equations based on them. For example, I have used the solving capability to compute contact times for a transit of Mercury at my location. It has telescope control through the INDI interface (I have not used telescope control and cannot vouch for it). It has a facility for registering an image with the star database (another capability I have not used). The web site is http://www.clearskyinstitute.com/ And here is a blurb "It takes some getting used to, but it's worth the effort. Once you understand its peculiarities, you'll find that XEphem can do just about anything you ask." Quoted with permission from Astronomy Hacks <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/astronomyhks>, by Robert and Barbara Thompson. I am also fond of Starry Night Pro on the Mac. I will have to give The Sky a try sometime. I did not know it had been ported to the Mac. Jim Cobb james@cobbzilla.net
