RE: [Utah-astronomy] Off-topic: Tobacco cessation
Chuck, I've told you before but I'll reiterate here. I know how hard it is to quit smoking - I was a two-pack-a-day Pall Mall smoker myself once. Quitting was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but also one of which I am proudest. I tip my hat to anyone who can overcome such an habit and I'm very happy for you and your wife. By now you've realized many benefits, but I will suggest one more. I'm convinced that tobacco smoke (and smoke from other substances that I won't get into here) obscures one's spiritual perception. No, I'm not talking about religion but the ability to perceive the mystical aspects of the universe. As astronomers, we are probably more sensitive to these matters anyway, but I wouldn't be surprised if you find that you have a renewed sense of wonderment as you observe the night sky and other natural phenomena. I could be wrong - just a thought. Anyway, congratulations to you both and good luck to maintain this change in your life! -----Original Message----- From: Chuck Hards [mailto:chuckhards@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 3:54 PM To: Utah-Astro Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Off-topic: Tobacco cessation Today marks 31 days since my wife and I quit smoking. I know several list members who smoke and let me just say that if I can give it up, you all can too. The first few days were terrible but it gets easier every day. I don't mean to preach, good grief I had my fill of it myself. What I want to do is encourage you to keep trying, never give up. Not even a broken hand and reconstructive surgery broke my resolve, this time it's for keeps. THANK YOU to the list friends who knew what I was attempting, and going through, and encouraged me to stick with it. It helped A LOT! Back to astronomy. Chuck wrote something about the Orion 80mm ED's tube appearing to be bigger than it needed to be and a possible larger version could be made of it. I wrote to Orion and asked them about the possibility of a bigger version of the ED mentioning that the tube looked like it could accommodate larger lenses. This is there reply:
Thanks for your e-mail and your interest in Orion products.
There is nothing immediate that I am aware of. But, our product development team is always working on new and exiting products.
Maybe if they get enough inquiries, they may consider coming out with a bigger version. No matter, the 80mm ED is a honey of a deal. Jim --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing
Charles Green made me aware that everytime I send an email that I have an attachment. I looked at the attachment and found: _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy So I went into my options and tried to figure out what was causing it - to no avail. Does anyone know how to get rid of the attachment? Jim --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing
Jim, it is a honey of a deal, but bigger is better in astronomy! This telescope is almost assuredly a test product, if I can draw any parallels from my own experiences in manufacturing. There is even a good chance that Orion was asked to test market it by the factory, in which case they may be in the dark on expanding the line (sure looks like a Vixen telescope to me), however it could genuinely be Orion designed too. But if they can retain the low mark-up as aperture increases, Al Nagler's brow will furrow. I've had this thing over a month now with no dark-sky opportunities, but on the moon and planets, where it counts, it's a winner. Color levels are every bit as low as those in a TV Ranger. BTW, has anyone heard anything about the new TV 5" refractor, other than you need to take out a second mortgage to afford it? ;) C. --- Jim Gibson <xajax99@yahoo.com> wrote:
