Mrs. Mo and I are talking about going to Great Basin this coming weekend. We've never been. Anyone got a particular spot recommended for setting up a telescope? Chrismo
If you plan to go to the national park, they are most likely to let you set up in the parking area by the camping spots just to the north of the buildings by Lehman caves. This is where their star parties are held. Not sure how much traffic there is this time of year so I don't know how much exposure you will have to white lights. However, knowing how much they befriend star gazers and astronomers I bet a brief chat with one of their rangers will prove invaluable in finding a good location. Good luck, and enjoy their dark skies. Josh On Mon, Sep 3, 2012 at 8:38 PM, Chrismo <djchrismo@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks Josh... I'm counting on the weekend following Labor Day to be pretty slow. On Mon, Sep 3, 2012 at 9:36 PM, Josh <mountaindrifter@gmail.com> wrote:

You picked the perfect weekend. Cooler temps, few people. You also get the summer sky as well as an advanced peek at the winter sky, without the single-digit temps. Be prepared for cold nights, however. Have fun! On Mon, Sep 3, 2012 at 10:53 PM, Chrismo <djchrismo@gmail.com> wrote:

Chrismo; You will have a great time at Great Basin. As Mark mentioned, contact Kelly Carroll and he will get you set up in the best possible place. Hopefully that place will be the picnic area that Josh referred to in a previous post. But as it is normally a day-use area (except during the astro festival each summer), there may be other spots they recommend for you. You will not be sorry you went! thanks for the insights! I emailed Kelly and I'll let you know how it goes. It's been a difficult summer for me to get out, between work, weather, and these crazy fires, so I'm stoked for a good night under a dark sky! On Tue, Sep 4, 2012 at 9:02 AM, Hutchings, Mat <mat.hutchings@siemens.com>wrote:
