Our own Joe Bauman has a piece in today's DesNews on the Perseids: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view2/1,4382,595084400,00.html?textfield=meteor+sh... Thanks again, Joe, keep up the good work. I am rather surprised that no local photographers took you up on your generous offer to run their meteor shots, however...What'd you have to pay Wally to use his shot? ;) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Thanks for the compliment, Chuck. And guess what? Wally was gracious enough to let us use it free. So, how do you know Wally? -- Best wishes, Joe
I know EVERYBODY... Just kidding, we've never met. I'm familiar with his work only; have seen that same shot before. Your experience at Little Mountain mimics my Hale-Bopp "adventure". I could never get an exposure longer than about 5 minutes before a car would drive up! --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Joe, The picture you ended up using was admittedly a bit better than the drawing I was going to send you. In the one I was going to submit, it depicted the Earth being knocked out of orbit by a huge comet, with dinosaurs flying all over the place. After a careful examination of my picture and the one you ended up using, I think perhaps maybe your audience of readers WOULD HAVE noticed the difference. In retrospect, we may have only ended up fooling those unconscious folks who were busy partying and not paying attention. ;) Good job! P.S. Are you sure those mountains in Wally's photo are real? They look like they were made out of the same stuff my comet drawing was... ;) Guy Quoting Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com>:

Actually, Wally emailed me a note about the mountains. They definitely are real. I think what happened is that he blasted them with light during the exposure so they would show up in the picture. In effect, that foze them in one location. But then as the world moved and his telescope tracked the stars, it left a dark edge where unlit rocks were moving (along with the rest of our world) in relation to the stars. Best wishes, Joe
