I added another image to my gallery... M104. I have decided to post this one as luminance only, since I can't seem to find time to add color data. Sooner or later I will get around to it, but in the meantime, here is the black and white version. http://www.utahastronomy.com/album16/Utah_Astronomy_M104?full=1 Cheers, Tyler
A real beaut. What was the exposure? And what is the f/ rating of your system? Thanks again, Joe
Joe, The image was made from 10x5-minute exposures. I used the Extender-Q with the Sky90 for f/8, but the image was enlarged somewhat for posting. Maybe I will also post the original scale image sometime soon. Tyler, can you give me some advice? I can't figure out how to combine a luminosity exposure with a color exposure! I have both varieties of view of M51 -- not as great as yours, but I'm working on it. The luminosity exposure is longer and has more detail. But if I can paste the color onto it, I think the overall view will be better. Can you tell me how to do it? I used my SBIG 402 and both views are on the same scale. Also, I used CCDOPS software. Any suggestions? Thanks, Joe
Joe, Do you have Maxim DL or Photoshop? I do all my layering in these two programs. If you have either, I can help. If not, my help won't be worth much. Let me know. Hi Tyler, I have Photoshop Elements, which came with my scanner. I suspect it may not be the full Photoshop, but if that's the case, I don't know what's missing. Thanks, Joe
Joe The Photoshop Elements that came w/ your scanner no matter how pared down is still a powerful tool for imaging. There are a few tools missing from the 7 or CS package and my only complaint about Elements is that the tool bar is arranged differently. Are you on a PC or Mac?? I can send you a copy of 7 or CS ............... Aloha from grey sky Maui Rob
Hi Rob, I think I'm OK with my Photoshop Elements, according to Tyler -- I'll try that first and see how it works with the FITS program. Thanks so much for thinking of me -- Yokwe, Joe
Joe, I recommend the following site: http://www.photoshopsupport.com/photoshop-blog/04/07/10-fits.html It has information on a program called the FITS Liberator.... which allows users of Photoshop and PS Elements to load FITS files directly into Photoshop. I use the procedure they outline to combine RGB FITS files. Then I add the luminance data by pasting it in as a new layer (on top) and changing its layer type to "Luminance". This allows all the detail of the luminance file to be seen, but allows the mixed colors underneath (color only) to show through. It works great and allows for easy layering. Read the instructions carefully... I was able to figure most of it out just by reading. If you have questions after that, I would be happy to help further. BTW - I don't think you will be able to use a copy of Photoshop CS. It requires an activation code directly from Adobe. However, Elements will work too. Tyler PS CS does require a code, I had forgotten that but I have a copy of PS7 for Joe that requires NADA but the desire to use it. Elements is a great, simpler program and if one gets really good w/ it, jumping to PS 7 or CS is pretty simple. I use 7 here at the house and CS at the lab. Aloha Rob
Great image! Too bad it was snowing... ;) Quoting Tyler Allred <tylerallred@earthlink.net>:
