There is a great reference book by David Levy, "Observing Variable Stars, A guide for the beginner" I bought it from Sky Publishing, bet it is available on Amazon.

That along with the AL program Robert mentioned is probably the best bet, it is probably one of the most individual pursuits for amateurs IE not generally star party objects. Bruce was extremely active in the AAVSO years ago, doing photoelectric

photometry from his backyard observatory. Not sure if he still does, but he's the local expert on variable observing.

Hello Richard,

I see a little bit of activity on the UVAA mailing list but I wondered if there were any informal outings that are coming up.
