My colleague and I have been asked to host a Star Gazing Party at Snowbird Resort on the 17th of this month. We are in need of assistants to manage telescopes as well as telescopes themselves on tripods, or some Dobsonians, for this event. In total, we need five telescopes that have primary mirrors of 6 to 8 inches or bigger. If you can lend us your assistances or know anyone who can, please contact me ASAP. You may reach me at the email: gregosmoros@gmail.com Again, the star party is on the 17th of this month.
Once more, as a last reminder, there will be a Star Gazing Party at Snowbird Resort on the 17th. Anyone who wants to come and bring their telescope is welcome. We plan to set up scopes on the peak (via transport by the tram) and at the resort itself at 8 PM. The crowd is expected to be equal to or greater than 100 people and it will be cold so please dress warm and come prepared to meet a lot of people. Please contact me if you are interested in joining in, my email is: gregosmoros@gmail.com Again, the star party is on the 17th of this month at 8 PM at Snowbird!
Guys who were there, good times :) Looked through Jay's 14" dob at Jupiter..could make out the round shape of storms within the storm bands, was amazing. Here is the Gamma Cygni Nebula in Cygnus :) http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3763&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 Not bad for 1 hour west of the city (lakeside). Enjoy !

Dave: It turned out GREAT! Looks even better than it did on your laptop screen last night. I will apologize one more time for our leaving early last night. You imagers probably hate us visual guys who pull out early. I tried to keep the speed down but I'm afraid the road has turned to talc. If we all meet up again, I will make a point to park downwind and closer to the road so we don't make such a fuss. I admire the work you guys do. Steve

I had a terrific night visually. Saw and sketched around 15 Herschels and then saw an additional 20 objects over the night, sketching about 4 of them in detail. My favorite of the night was NGC 7331 and Stephen's Quintet. Both Dave and I counted 4 of the galaxies easily (which means we probably saw all 5 since two are really close in their merger I believe but someone can correct me). I really enjoyed everyone. I also learned what a hard time you imagers have. It really does require patience. I also spent time with the double cluster last night and did a rough sketch. I think if the weather clears toward the end of the week I may set up in the backyard with the laptop and do a digital sketch at the eyepiece, purely digital to capture it. It would be the only object that night. David, your work is incredible as always! Love your image there. Me thinks I might make it my desktop if that is okay. It did get cold out there but no dew which is a good thing. Oh, the other success was I got the intelliscope to work its best out of every time I used it. Funny how finally reading the manual for tips really does work. I star hopped to most things until toward the end of my night when I get tired. I find that is when I use it the most though I have been verifying with a star hop anyway. Joe, your image looked okay when I looked at it early this a.m. after I was tearing down. Can you use it at all? I wanted to get in a short session tonight but I got home and unloaded and cleaned off the dust and then went to bed til 11:30a.m. Got up, did some stuff and did my grading then fell asleep around 4:00p.m. and just got up. So I'll stay in tonight but I am going to head to a nice quiet stop locally that I use tomorrow for a session from around 8:30p.m. to 12:00a.m. and then home and in bed by 12:30a.m. to 12:40a.m. I need the night to sleep.

Joe: No one said you weren't interesting company. I hope to have your patience some day. I do admire the time and energy you guys put into your efforts. Bill and I had a great night with visual astronomy. Sounded like Jay did also. Don't forget to look up every now and then when the computer is giving you fits. It's beautiful. See you again soon, I'm sure. Steve

Hey Steve, thanks for joining us. I don't think anybody minded the dust
because our telescopes were covered at the time. And as for your leaving, that didn't cause any sort of problem for me. I'm just sorry I wasn't interesting company. -- Joe

Steve

make out the
round shape of storms within the storm bands, was
amazing.

I was the lone wolf that was out at the Gravel Quarry on Saturday, one of the nicest nights there in a long time for me, despite a breeze that kicked up a bit from breeze to wind occasionally and ruined a few of my photos. I wanted to try my hand at a few images and got a few good ones that I'll try to get posted as soon as I get a little time to process them. I love to see the stuff David and Tyler do and they may inspire me yet to take this more seriously. For now astro-imaging remains just a fun use of my equipment yielding mixed results at best, but that one good one keeps me going. Hi David, it was great to see you and the others last night. I apologize for not visiting more but I had my hands full. The big problem was in trying to use my new software that was supposed to provide drift-like accuracy in finding true north. Unfortunately it froze up everything while trying to take a 15-second, no-tracking, image to help align. Much more time went by without tracking and I had to shut down the computer to get its little wheel to stop spinning. By then the scope was badly off but I wasn't aware of the extent of the problem. I could not get it to point correctly. Toward dawn I finally did shut everything down, including the telescope, and then it couldn't get a GPS fix for many minutes. I had to shut down again. At last it took the fix and rotated the telescope so that I could orient on Polaris. That was a hassle because I was nearly standing on my head to look through the finder scope! But after turning everything off and trying again, I managed to find north. Then the setup, minus the new software, operated normally. But it was too close to morning to fiddle enough. I got some views of M74, though not in good focus. I just live and learn. Thanks, Joe --- On Sun, 9/12/10, David Rankin <David@rankinstudio.com> wrote:
