I don't believe the building is to be turned into a parking lot, but maybe I just missed that announcement. I would like to see some good public use for it like an educational center. Best, Joe
If you are referring to the old planetarium, there was an article in the paper last summer suggesting that it was propsoed to turn into parking and I remmber being so dismayed at the thought. This is too wonderful a building to level for parking. But, it was in a newspaper article as I recall. Jim' --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Hi, I guess I missed the post that started this thread, but if the original question was about the Hansen planetarium building, I don't think it can be torn down as it is on a national list of historic sites. Patrick Jim Stitley wrote:

Patrick and others, In light of Patrick's generous offer with the Brandt refractor, I got to thinking about SPOC and the 14-inch scope for sale that is sitting in Charlie Green's backyard. Why not salvage the optics and drive from that scope instead of selling it? The mount is HIGHLY impractical to keep as is in my opinion for several reasons, but I suspect the drive motor and components could be usefully applied to a better design. Take all that metal and have some bright people like Bruce design and create something to permanently mount the Brandt on, and take the 14-inch optics and make a nice portable truss dob out of it that could be stored at SPOC and wheeled outside (with detachable wheelbarrow handles like I use on my 16-inch TeleKit) whenever there was a star party? Seems like a better idea than selling it off for less than it's worth and likely having much of it wind up in the scrap yard anyway... As to buildings, I've noticed that BYU has a large observatory dome sitting out in their back lot for the past couple of years. Does anyone know if they have sold it, or are interested in selling it? Maybe we could get them to donate it...? I don't know, what do y'all think? Let's at least kick some ideas around... -Rich __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Rich, These are good ideas, and make good on two scopes. Great thinking! Just to add to the ideas, the 14" could be trailer mounted and made available for members to take to dark locations. Some clever thought could even make the trailer into a poncet table or similar. Small wheels instead of 14" tires on the trailer would make the scope easier to use. That was what I thought, too. That was why I was surprised when I saw that suggestion in the paper last summer, I believe. But, this happens all the time across the country with hsitroic buildings. Leads to protests. Some win and soem don't. I hope the source was incorrect. It would be a shame to lose such a beautiful building. But this idea seems to keep coming up. Hope it is wrong! Or, we can chaneg the course. Jim --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net> wrote:
