The Verge: How a telescope forum feud ended with prison time

Some of you know that I am an Administrator on Cloudy Nights. I had just been promoted to Admin there a few months when this happened. I was there and saw everything happen in real time, and behind the scenes. This was very serious and caused Astronomics (the owner of Cloudy Nights) a serious financial loss. It is to the owner's credit that he feels sorry for the perpetrator's family. It really was a form of cyber crime and the Feds take it seriously. I'll answer most questions about it off-list if you want to email me, but what's in the press now covers it pretty well. Remember this was over 2 years ago, IIRC. He just got sentenced a few days ago. On Mon, Dec 10, 2018 at 8:16 AM Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com> wrote:

I didn’t realize the link didn’t come through: https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/10/18131024/ddos-attack-telescope-forum-cfa... <https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/10/18131024/ddos-attack-telescope-forum-cfaa-prison> DDoS attacks are no joke—I’ve fought them for a good chunk of my career. There’s something about being dissociated from the attack because of a glowing screen and a keyboard that makes it feel less real for the perpetrators. I’d just never heard of this one (so many go through unreported, that isn’t too surprising really). I think Bier is a really stand up guy for what he said in Goodyear’s defense. He didn’t have to do any of that. I won’t debate the merits of the CFAA, but just say that it was written well before most people had even heard of the Internet, and so it’s penalties spring from a time when the crimes were more difficult to carry out due to the barrier to entry for the ‘net.
