Re: [Utah-astronomy] Telescope donation
If Troy changes his mind . . . I know a group of about 15 students that would love to refurbish it and use it. On 2009-04-11 16:37, Ann House wrote:
My neighbor county commissioner gave me his Edmond Scientific (?) 5' reflector. He thinks it is about 35-40 years old. It needs a bit of work (broken tripod), but the mirror looks to be in fine shape. Are there any takers? Would it be a good loaner for SLAS members?

It's either a 4.25" or a 6". Edmund didn't sell a 5". If the mount has 5/8" diameter shafts, it's the smaller scope. If it has 1" shafts, it's the 6". The also sold an 8" reflector, but it wasn't offered on a tripod, to the best of my memory, but a 3-legged pedestal base. Would make a dandy loaner if it hasn't been given away already.
Jay, I do think it would be a fun family project to fix it up, but I think 15 students could use it more. I say give the scope to Jay. Ann and I have already spoken, and if she doesn't see this, I'll just pass it on to you Jay. I hope the students enjoy it and have fun looking at the stars. I'm wondering why more teachers aren't making use of the exising SLAS loaner program. It's a heckuva resource.
