A colleague at work asked me today about weather stations available on the Wasatch front (he lives in Kaysville); seems his mother is in the market for one ($400 or less). Anyone on the list know of something recommendable? I suspect the best deals are probably on the web, or...? Anyway, I figured someone here might be into that sort of thing. Rich, I know some Ham Radio guys that like the Ultimeter brands: http://www.peetbros.com/ They are modular so adding on features can be done in such a way that is kinder to the pocketbook. I'll talk to a couple of other Astro/Hams that I know have wx stations and see what they prefer. Hey, Gary, good to see you post. Im reminded of what a meteorologist once told me. Do you know the difference between "climate" & "weather"? Climate is what you expect; weather is what you get! Good wx joke C.H., Speaking of off topic stuff, my wife and I went deer hunting with our '93 Buick last night and bagged us a big ol' 4 point. Biggest buck I've ever seen (Course I'm not a deer hunter so any buck could be in that category... B). It crushed the front quarter panel of our car, smashed in the hood and I found two dents from his horns near the windshield wipers and one horn tip almost came through the windscreen in front of me. Instead of crashing in on us, it rolled over our slanted windscreen and landed behind us. We were coming back from Park City and were about 5 miles from Coalville. Could have been disasterous but we are unhurt. Probably a good warning to all you star gazers going up and down canyons this time of year. Oh and best advice of all is to wear your seatbelts, we always do!!! Gary, Glad you made it home safe! My sister in law is a quadraplegic (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) thanks to deer in the road; seatbelts do help, but so does defensive driving (her sister swerved to miss them and rolled the car). Better the deer than your own neck... Rich --- Gary Liptrot <n7zi@comcast.net> wrote:

I'm so glad you're safe. Re. Rick's note about his sister-in-law swerving, I had an experience with swerving too. Frank Sinatra was singing "My Way" on the car radio as I drove to work in 1969 or '70. There was a box turtle in the road, I swerved, I hyroplaned (this was in Maryland, where rain actually falls sometimes, and the road was slick), started to go off the road to the right toward a home with a big front window, wrestled the car around so it did not go off that direction, recrossed the road, went off the road to the left, drove into a ditch, rolled and hit a small tree. I crawled out of the overturned wreckage and Frank was still singing. As far as I know the turtle was fine. So yes, I agree, hit the turtle, dog or cat before swerving in a dangerous situation. I'm not sure about a large animal though. Certainly I'd do my best to avoid a moose, horse or cow. I understand moose are a big cause of fatalities in Maine because when a car hits one, the moose is so tall and heavy it goes through the windshield. Best wishes, Joe
Thanks for the thoughts gang. I know the UHP officer that helped us said "Never swerve for anything smaller than your car." Easier said than done. That deer looked bigger than a bus up close but I'm glad my wife did the right thing (froze!) instead of rolling us through the borrow pit. Sorry for your Sister-In-Law Rich. Several cars behind us the person swerved, went sideways through the borrow pit and ended up going the opposite way like nothing happened. I think they were going back home for a change of undies... B) Well, enough of this scary stuff for now, eh... B) Safe observing and I hope everyone gets an auto-stacking video camera or something equally cool for Christmas. I tried to put in my order but he won't let me sit on his lap...
