Re: [Utah-astronomy] Good Dark Sky Locations
Joe, I would take it as a honor to tag along come spring. I would like to try out that gravel pit by the fort. I also think I'll be getting permission to use a rancher's open land out here in Herriman that has a good view except to the south southwest where the Oquirrh's rise up, but it is a dark sky out that way. That would give me a good close area to go to. I agree that Herriman has decent skies, and my own backyard once a neighbor goes to bed or upstairs and shuts off her lights are really decent also. So I'll guess I'll be happy for that for now. Thanks for the replies and the advice! On 2008-12-02 18:28, Joe Bauman wrote:
Jay is always welcome with me! I head out to the Wedge whenever I can, but I have promised Cory that I'm shut down for the winter, and it's not smart to break a promise to the wife. See you in the spring, if you'd like .... Joe

Hi Jay,
I can't speak to to nearby observing sites (there are others on the list better qualified to speak to that).
As for using SPOC in the winter, the grounds are open year round but there is no power and no shelter and the snow can get pretty deep.
If Joe is looking for company you might want to tag along on one of his regular outings.

I have ok skies at my home in Herriman, but I am wondering just a couple of newbie type questions. First, are there any good dark sky areas with 45 minutes of Herriman that any one knows of and will share? Next, is it worth it to plan a trip out to SPLOC with the equipment during the winter? Anyway, just a couple of easy questions and any advice I would appreciate it.
