Re: [Utah-astronomy] ISS sun crossing -- questions and invitation
Thank you, Patrick. Will you post the new map when it comes out? -- Joe ------------------------------ On Thu, Oct 17, 2013 11:54 PM MDT Wiggins Patrick wrote:

How wide is the path?
CalSky is showing it to be 14.15 km wide. See: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/iss2013oct18.jpg
So you can still be a bit off the centerline and see a pass. But as with total solar eclipses, the centerline is usually preferred.
Assuming it's fairly wide, does the map just indicate the centerline?
Yes. Not like the maps for eclipses that also show the edges.
Is there a significant difference in estimates of the path?
It appears so. The map I posted was from Calsky this (Thursday) morning while the map Brent posted shows the path further south so maybe it's based on newer data.
If so, is there a convenient spot that is good regardless of which path is right?
I suppose you could pick a spot midway between the two paths. But I'd wait until tomorrow's map comes out to see what it shows.
Do we know the precise tine?
Yes, 16:52:42 for the Bountiful.
Will the sun's altitude be high enough for a good picture?
Depends on your idea of what's good. 18.7° for SPOC which would mean it'll be a tiny bit lower for Bountiful. But still well above the horizon. Of course looking through that much air (about 3 times as much as at the zenith) wont exactly help with resolution. BTW, CalSky says the distance to ISS from SPOC at transit will be 1065.3 km.
And finally, if it is going to be feasible to photograph it, would anybody like to meet Cory and me at some convenient place?
I hope to be in the air at that time so I probably wont see this one. That's not to say that I'm saying it's not worth watching, just that I've seen a bunch of ISS transits so it's kind of lost it's "specialness" for me. :)

Happy to help. I'll get it posted provided they issue it before I leave the house. You could also subscribe and have it and other alerts emailed to you directly. Do that at: https://www.calsky.com Cheers,
