Thanks for the announcement Seth. T ried to contact her yesterday about the glasses at the planetarium, but we couldn't hook up. T old her to get over to the Planetarium asap this morning. S uspect she's missed the boat, but waiting to hear from her . She might have got there around noon. It gets INCREDIBLY frustrating to have people decide they want to participate at the last minute. I'm delighted they want to go . W asn't planning on taking the C-8 with the mylar filter, but will now. I have a 3" finder scope with a #14 welder's glass ready to go. That was all I was going to take (well the camera and a tripod, of course). Hmm after loading all that, hope there's room for the chairs lol.
The Leonardo on 5th South (the old library) still has some glasses, but they are going fast. $2.99. -A
Has anyone checked the welding supply houses around town? #12 welders glass is OK, but a bit bright. Best is #14. I have a couple I plan to use this weekend. I usually keep one in my truck and one in my car. Many sunspots are naked eye visible. ________________________________ From: "jcarman6@q.com" <jcarman6@q.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 1:04 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] DeLoy Thanks for the announcement Seth. Lexan or polycarbonate plastic supposedly blocks 100% of UV rays. Don't know what it does for IR (probably not much), but it can be used as another LAYER of protection. -Barrett -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Seth Jarvis Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 2:46 PM To: 'Utah Astronomy' Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] DeLoy Brent, #14 welders' shade is _barely_ in the safe zone, physiologically speaking. Seth, I watched the video and Dr. Chou mentions that an attenuation of 10^3 for infrared is ok, and 10^5 is acceptable for the visual wavelengths. Shade Number 12 has an attenuation of 10^5 (100,000) across all of the required wavelengths. He specifically mentions that a GLASS filter should be used and not a polycarbonate filter. #14 has an attenuation of 7.2X10^5, and so attenuated the sun by an additional factor of 7.2 over the #12 filter. The #12 does appear to be safe but gives a brighter image that may be a bit uncomfortable to look at. The body of the site also suggests that an attenuation of 10^4.5 is satisfactory. # 12 seems to pass the litmus test in all of the material. I will admit that I have not read the entire text, but I have watched the presentation in the video. Does the body of the article conflict with this? Some interesting facts he brought up: 1. Eye damage is NOT thermal, but photo-chemical. In fact, the increase in temperature of the cornea is only 2 to 3 degrees C for naked eye observations. It takes an exposure of around 40 seconds to do the damage, and it doesn't show up for 24-48 hours. Most of this damage heals itself within a few weeks. 2. Smoked glass filters are good. The problem with them is that the soot falls off and the transmission increases. 3. Once the sun is near the horizon, and it has turned red it is safe to look at without a filter. I was surprised by these three facts he presented in the video. I purchased some eclipse viewers from the planetarium yesterday and have not had a chance to use them yet. They appear to be plastic with carbon black particles embedded in it. Dr. Chou mentions this type of filter and says it is safe, but the image is not as pleasing because of the light diffusion through the carbon. It leaves a halo around the disk of the sun, and decreases the detail. I am anxious to see the results for myself. I just had a chance to look at the sun with the planetarium filter. I did NOT notice any difference in sharpness compared to my glass filter, nor did I see a halo from the planetarium's filter. It also attenuates the sun more visually than my shade 14 welders glass filter. In the welders glass the sun has a green color and in the planetarium filter it has a yellow color. ________________________________ From: Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 3:12 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] DeLoy Dr. Chou also mentions that the Baader film has the aluminization on the inside of two layers of plastic and so the alluminum will not scratch. ________________________________ From: Seth Jarvis <SJarvis@slco.org> To: 'Utah Astronomy' <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 2:46 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] DeLoy Brent, #14 welders' shade is _barely_ in the safe zone, physiologically speaking. Brent, Thanks for that excellent write-up about welders filters. Highly informative. I've found that the #14 welders glass, regardless of source, tints the Sun strongly green. I've also discovered that it's a lot more pleasant to look through if I also use my sunglasses with it. I have successfully mounted the little eclipse glasses filters in front of the objectives on a pair of 7x35 binoculars (electrical tape covering any portion of cardboard frame that would let light leak into the binocs), and found they work great. A poor-man's binocular filter. BTW if someone is desperate I would be willing to part with a one or two eclipse glasses, I bought from Deloy. No mark-up. 801 792-4031 Erik Brent,

Has anyone checked the welding supply houses around town? #12 welders glass is OK, but a bit bright. Best is #14. I have a couple I plan to use this weekend. I usually keep one in my truck and one in my car. Many sunspots are naked eye visible.

Finally, I found the article I was looking for. Dr. Chou wrote an article in 1988 and it was published in Sky and Telescope, Aug, page 119. I found that article or a similar one, here: http://www.mreclipse.com/Special/filters.html
I don't know what happened, but that post went before I was ready. Finally, I found the article I was looking for. Dr. Chou wrote an article in 1988 and it was published in Sky and Telescope, Aug, page 119. I found that article or a similar one, here: http://www.mreclipse.com/Special/filters.html Dr. Chou tested many different types of filters including Pop Tart wrappers, photographic film, smoked glass etc. He gives the result in this article along with the criteria for safety and the safety factors designed into solar filters. It is very good reading.
In my attempts to find the condition of the airstrip at Beryl Junction I met a fellow from that area. His name is Rock Tucker. He used to fly his twin engine Cessna from the airstrip at Beryl Junction. He has been kind enough to stay in touch with me for the last three or four weeks. He just called me and indicated that there are many people who are looking at this area to view the eclipse. He told me about one group who is there today scouting the area for locations to set up. They did not like the school at Beryl Junction because of the trees to the west. The airstrip does not suffer from that problem, and he can think of no obstructions for viewing the eclipse from the airstrip. The reason he called me is to tell me of this group who will be setting up in the parking lot of the Post Office in Newcastle, and offered me a ride over there if I wanted it. (Others on this list have made the same offer - Thank You!) He says this group looked at the church parking lot in Newcastle but choose the post office because it is more on the center line. There is a C store about a block away they are planning to use for bathroom facilities and soft drinks. This group will also be doing a presentation on other eclipses from around the world including south america and the arctic. Those of you planning on Newcastle might want to be aware that there has been a continuous stream of folks evaluating locations there. You might want to arrive early. We will be landing at the airstrip between 4:30 and 5:00 and do not anticipate any crowds at all. It is only about 300 feet north of the center of annularity. Since it is a charted airstrip I do not think anyone will interfere, but we'll be watching. I have talked to several pilots about joining us there, and there is only one who has expressed any interest. There may be two aircraft in our group, but I don't think any one else from another location will be there. It is charted as a private strip with private use - prior permission required. Conditions today are rain off and on this morning, but it has cleared up and the wind is out of the north. Rock believes these conditions will hold through the weekend. If any of you run into Rock, give him a big thanks from me. I hope he'll come over and visit us as well.
When Bruno and I visited the convenience store they indicated they would be closed on Sunday. Things may have changed with time. We tried to work a deal with the church to open the building. They wouldn't do it. Facilities may be scarce. Bruno and I will be in Kanarraville where we have worked out a deal with a private land owner. Joe, My cell is 435-669-5507 (I know you asked for Chris’ cell). We will be out in Diamond Valley for the eclipse. I’ve sent a good link this time that has a map that shows where my friend’s house is in Diamond Valley. The observing site is not far from his house. Hopefully, there won’t be too many people out there. I was out there last night. Sun set at 20:31. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=213482502410548872603.0004c071adc6... Maybe we will see you. Dave On May 20, 2012, at 8:05 AM, Joe Bauman wrote:

_______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy
