Shadow of Contrail From Whispering Oaks Lodge-Near Moab, Utah
Have any of you seen this effect before. This is a photo of the shadow of a contrail you could see from the porch of Whispering Oaks Lodge near Moab, Utah on the morning of July 27th. The shadow of the contrail was very prominent. I’ve never seen this effect before and thought it was very interesting. The shadow lasted about 20 minutes and became wider and more turbulent-looking as the contrail broke up. http://www.flickr.com/photos/78046474@N06/9396674461/
Hi Dave, it looks more like the smoke trail of a rocket launch to me. It's quite odd. Joe, The iPad2 photo doesn’t do it justice. When the guys that were up there with me post their photos you can see it was a contrail shadow. I’ll post their photos when I get them. From the lodge you could see the shadow on the ground in the distance. I couldn’t see that in Charlotte’s photo. The contrail had dissipated some when Charlotte came out on the deck and snapped the photo with her iPad. In fact, I was the first one who saw it. I was out on the deck drinking coffee, recovering from the drunk-fest the night before, when I looked out and saw it. I thought, ‘what is that’, then realized it was the shadow of the contrail that was just left behind. I called in the “photographers” and they shot several pictures. Charlotte came out a little later (about 10 minutes) and took the iPad photo. As you can see the contrail had started to break up by then, but was still casting a reasonable shadow. It held the interest of many of the hung-over drunks for a considerable spell. Sort of like touching the Monolith. Dave On Jul 30, 2013, at 12:21 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

I saw the phenomenon last year, in fact there were several contrails that crossed each other's path at the time. The best part happened when the shadow actually passed over me! It was in the fall, early October, and one contrail was aligned north-south. That's the one whose shadow swept over me. Cool! On Mon, Jul 29, 2013 at 11:11 PM, Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> wrote:
