Local material sources for a hardcase for an Atlas EQ-G mount
Does anyone have recommendations for local SLC sources for materials to make a hardcase for a large, I believe it's called an HD-5 type, mount? I recently acquired an Atlas EQ-G mount. It weighs about 55lbs. It's about 24" on a side to store. I would like to put it into a hardcase, instead of a soft-pack, preferrably one with wheels. I was planning to go to Lowe's tonight to look for a plastic storage box with wheels on it, but I am stumped on where to get that much pull foam to line the box. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. You might check a sporting good store that sells hard cases to ship golf clubs in. Also, a few years ago I made a hard case for my 4 inch scope using plastic pipe (I can't remember if it's for gas or water), and gray foam like you get in camera/lens cases. You can purchase that foam from a place about 28th South and 5th West. If you want more details, I could scout out the names of the businesses. I can't remember them now. My case is very strong and works great. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Canopus56" <canopus56@yahoo.com> To: "Utah Astronomy List Serv" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2005 2:49 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Local material sources for a hardcase for an AtlasEQ-G mount

That's a good idea - store the tripod and the mount in one hardbox. I was thinking of storing the tripod and mount separately.

I wouldn't make a separate trip. Let me see what I can put together first. But if you do have a good local supplier for the plug'n'pull foam, I'd be interested in knowing just to have a reliable source. - Canopus56 __________________________________ Yahoo! I got my foam in 2" x 24" x 72" sheets from Silver State Supplies at 1010 W 2610 S in Salt Lake. I had to shape it with knifes and razor blades. I got the plastic pipe and end pieces from Mountain States Supply, Inc. at 33rd So and about 250 West. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Canopus56" <canopus56@yahoo.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2005 5:26 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Local material sources for a hardcase for anAtlasEQ-G mount

The solution I adopted was a "Meade #50 large accessory case" The Meade #50 foam lined case is now a close-out no-longer manufactured item that costs $50-$60. The specs and my tape measure said that the Atlas 10 mount should not fit into the inside dimensions of the case listed on many websites. The outside dimensions are 9" x 16" x 20". When some of the foam is removed, the Altas 10 just fits inside with acceptable padding on 4 of 6 sides. The weight of the mount is too much for the latches, and I am working re-enforcing a center latch. I will be fabricating a custom-cut foam piece. - Canopus56 __________________________________ Yahoo!
