Just what we need, real scientists adding fuel to the 2012 Mayan calendar bruhaha. I intend to sacrifice a male virgin (if I can find one) and watch the plieades culminate at zenith. Then if they continue on to the west, the binding of the years will be complete (as in every 52 years). We either get wiped out or good to go for another 52 years. My guess is we are good to go and that sweet red giant will remain. The worse thing that could happen is we lose the well defined shape of Orion. Now that would be a major disappointment. ----- Original Message ----- From: "M Wilson" <astro_outwest@yahoo.com> To: "Utah astronomy blog" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 6:27:23 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] A Second Sun for Us? Don't you all realize the reason the Mayans ended their calendar in 2012 was that was the year they thought Bret Farvre would retire? I marvel they could forecast that closely. Larry Holmes On 8/31/2011 12:10 PM, jcarman6@q.com wrote:

I'm amazed that they could predict the end of the world but not their own civilization. Dan On Aug 31, 2011, at 3:37 PM, Larry Holmes wrote:

Is Betelgeuse's axis pointed at us? Is it of sufficient mass to release enough x-rays to wipe life on earth out? I've read that supernovae could have a negative effect on earth biology as far off as 3000 light years. Gamma Ray bursts would be deadly at much greater distance. With our luck, it will blow when it's exactly 12 hours opposite the sun. Too much to ask that it blows when the sun is in Taurus or Gemini.
