Because of the weather last year, I wasn't able to set up my 10 inch dob and show kids the moon and/or Jupiter. This year the weather looks good so it is time for a little neighborhood outreach and come views of the waxing crescent moon on the terminator and Jupiter if it is up high enough. Anyone else going to do this? Besides the 10 inch dob I'll have a late 1960's Tasco Spotting Scope that zooms that is an excellent lunar observing scope. Anyway, just curious. -- Jay Eads
We are planning on it, although our candy may all be gone before the sky gets dark.... Quoting Jay Eads <jayleads@gmail.com>:

Or sticky fingers on the eyepiece! Notice that the 14 isn't getting set up! If your showing Jupiter and want a quick hand out to give them or if you can print the image and then put it in the sheet protector for people to look at while they view, it shows the bands and other items on Jupiter. Here is the link. http://www.mvas-ny.org/images/JupiterCloud.jpg I often find the parents like to look as much as the kids. Yep. I'll be on the driveway with a telescope also showing the Moon. They'll have to look to get the other treat. Had fun today looking at the Sun, the switching to Venus and Mercury, all in bright daylight around 2:00 pm. At around 128x you can get a hint of their gibbous shapes. Count your blessings!!!!! The neighbors across the street (we call them the Griswalds) go all out at Halloween. Spook alley in the back yard, thousands of dollars spent on decorations, and they give out great candy. Over the years this has brought thousands of screaming kids, their teenage brothers and sisters and parents racing up and down the street till at least 11:00 P.M. We hate Halloween. Steve

Ahhh, Steve, a Halloweenie, didn't think it was possible - not you. My niece's house could be your neighbors. They decorate, have a talking pumpkin. It gets hysterical, you have older kids singing "I'm a little teapot ..." just to get candy. Cars bring a load of kids just to this house, then drive off. Its in the Glendale area, so a wide cross-section of nationalities. Jason and Freddie Kruger are there, in person. Jason is my nephew. He is just a mannequin until Halloween night and then he comes alive. Trolling up and down the driveway with his machete in hand. I go there cause my neighborhood doesn't have a lot of kids either. When I first moved in, I did it one year and got about 20, but for years after I was the "telescope lady." ----- Original Message ----- From: "Siegfried Jachmann" <siegfried@jachmann.org> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, October 31, 2011 9:36:55 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Halloween Treat Think we found one [?] On Mon, Oct 31, 2011 at 9:26 AM, Robert Taylor <robtaylorslc@gmail.com>wrote:

Count your blessings!!!!! The neighbors across the street (we call them the Griswalds) go all out at Halloween. Spook alley in the back yard, thousands of dollars spent on decorations, and they give out great candy. Over the years this has brought thousands of screaming kids, their teenage brothers and sisters and parents racing up and down the street till at least 11:00 P.M. We hate Halloween. Steve

I did see that link on the video and watched again. Great fun and even better memories. Brian and I had a great time this summer. No better place to go telescoping than here at Bryce. It is getting a bit cold, however. (18F when I took some pics on the canyon rim early in the morning last week.) I had a terrific evening from 5:30p.m. until right now showing the Moon and then Jupiter for the last hour. I had over 60 parents and kids take a look. A very good night! Love using the XT10 at home, took only 5 min. to bring the tube and the base in. On Mon, Oct 31, 2011 at 7:49 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I ended up with 19 kids and some 10-15 adults. That is a record for recent years. It was very mild outside. After being clear all day, clouds moved in late. Just as I was finished setting up, and had 7 kids here, the Moon ducked behind the first thick clouds. Later arrivals were treated to a nice 64X view. 19 kids? I had way more than that. I was too busy to get enough pictures. It was a great night ! Not "The best Halloween ever" but a very good night. Started with a little solar observing, followed by early lunar observing and the small kids. All night long I was having people wait for a break in the clouds. We never waited more than a few minutes. If I had been two miles further south I don't think we would have ever been interrupted. Never did see Jupiter. I could see it through the trees but too many clouds once it got high enough. You can check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErlUENy4qfk Good Night all.

We only had about six groups of kids, almost all young 'uns with one or both parents in-tow. The last group came at about 8:30, so I got to bed on-time. We WAY overbought on candy, that's for sure! I periodically snuck out back with the 4.25" but never had enough sucker holes to see anything at all, and I'm only a couple of miles east of Steve.

Hi Mat, Short answer: Yes. Long answer: If you land today's parachutes correctly it's like taking a step while walking (very little impact). In fact, many folks today on their first couple of jumps land so softly they land on their butts. Still, the old canopies shown in the picture are not like the even older military gear that tend to slam the jumper into the ground (I have one of those too but have not jumped it for several years). Rather, landing the ones shown in the picture is like jumping from a platform a meter or two high. BTW, for those who might be interested, the guy jumping the Paradactyl (the triangular canopy) put a video camera on his foot facing up and got this: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2297033178698 If that's not working yet (it went down as I was about to send this) here's a compressed version: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/dactyl-2011oct31/tom-dactyl-02.mov And a few more images from Monday's jump: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2570742513677.147659.1407672426&typ... patrick
Patrick, have you ever done any parasailing or gliding? Seems that a bit of "flying" would be infinitely preferable to just a straight 'chute drop. Or is it more of a nostalgic thing with you?
Or is it the "free fall"?

Yes, got my commercial glider ticket in Heber several years ago. But for me at least, jumping isn't just a "chute drop" rather it's like being a part of the sky for a few minutes. Really a great feeling. Airplanes and even gliders are noisy. The old parachutes are quiet. And looking up at that canopy that I first saw above my head when I was 16 is just plain special (the other day when it opened above me I looked up and said aloud "Hello, old friend". Plus as Steve mentioned, there's also the freefall. It's the closest I think a human can come to being like a bird. In fact, one of the slogans Skydive Utah uses in its advertising is "Discover why the birds sing". You've got to try it Chuck. What's say we have Utah-Astronomy Day at Skydive Utah next spring? Folks can make their first jumps during the day and then bring out telescopes during one of the DZ's definitely "non-Utah" parties that evening... patrick
I have to agree with Patrick. I have only jumped out of a plane once, so far. It was one of the singular events of my life. The free fall was amazing and after the canopy deployed, the quiet and peace of being in the air has echoed in my memory since. If you haven't done it...do it. Here's my Halloween report: Left home around 5:40 headed for Glendale. On the way I screamed in my car. I screamed at the weatherman and I screamed at mother nature. The weatherman predicted the storm would arrive at midnight - clear skies for Halloween and like the sucker/idiot I am, I believed him. Arrived in the Glendale area around 6:00 with C-8 in trunk and my red flowing long-sleeved robe with hood and black cloth face over my shoulder. Not even the moon was visible, so the telescope didn't get set up. The talking pumpkin was silent (they couldn't find the two-way radio equipment). "Freddie Kruger" is now back east in medical school. (Damn, but he was a good Freddie, got the kids singing all the time). I was recruited? enlisted? hood-winked? shanghaied? into manning the giant pumpkin and passing out the candy. The kids started arriving around 6:30. Apparently, no one knows the Barney song - guess he is passe. Many didn't know the teapot song. But we had a winner with Twinkle Twinkle. (If I hear another person singing that song they might get strangled.) That is as as close as I came to seeing a heavenly body last night. There were a few rousing choruses of Happy Birthday and even a Wish You a Merry Christmas. By 7:55 the 10 boxes of 30 each normal candy bars were gone. Fortunately there were large bags of snack bars still around - we made do with those. At times, there was a line up of kids waiting to pass my table. I was doing them 10 at a time. (Wish that had been at a telescope - It had been so in the past). All were required to go through the back yard which was done in a zombie motif this year. The bride and groom zombies were a big hit, with a number of pictures with wee ones standing in front. And there were about 7 high school aged zombies moving around and (hehehe) they were allowed to touch. You could tell, when you heard the screams. Around 8:15 there was a break in the flow and I checked the sky. Sucker holes everwhere. No moon and yet, finally, feebly blazing over the tree tops was Jupiter. That was about the time the crowd petered out. We shut down at 9:00. And this morning????? ITS SNOWING Thanks Steve for your video. Loved the turning pages and yes, noticed it was 2012, but didn't care. Wished it were mine. I got mostly football players and ghouls, there was a fairy princess or two, but mostly everyone was taller than me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 1, 2011 6:28:42 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Halloween Treat We only had about six groups of kids, almost all young 'uns with one or both parents in-tow. Joan, great report!!! Sounds like you had a good time in spite of the weatherman and mother nature. By the way, I know ALL the words to the Barney song and the Teapot song but since you are out of the large candy bars it doesn't sound like there is much in it for me. I really did luck out with the sucker holes last night. I had one young Vampire who was unable to see the moon but his mom brought him back later (at his insistence) and he got the clearest and brightest view. I did update the video with the correct link but of course now it is a different URL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_NOCLjAad8 It was a very fun night and I sure do thank all of you who encouraged me to get out on the sidewalk for Halloween 2011.

OK, since this early AM I must have been visited by three spirits of Halloween. We are going to try something different this year. I'm airing up the tires on the Scopebuggy and will be set up with the 6" by dark. The Clear Sky clock looks more or less OK, the wind conditions are looking like they will improve around dusk. I wish I had a helper to pass out the candy but I can do it and operate the scope all by myself if necessary. The worst that can happen is that my wife (bless her heart) will be trapped in the house with two exceptionally aggravated Shih Tzu's. They will probably be fine unless the two Schnauzers up the street start barking. Since they bark in German I can't tell what they are saying but it sure upsets my two girls. More later. Steve

Rob has it correct! I have to admit over the years we have become "Halloweenies". I'm thinking it may be the dogs. We have two Shih Tzu's and they don't act like small yappy dogs unless someone comes to the door. Enough said! Steve

And if the "Griswalds" spend thousand on astronomy equipment and had kids, parents, etc. all lining up and screaming for joy to see the skies, that would be fine. Joy, passion and fun are good wherever you find it in life. (Ann, aka the Halloween Queen).

Steve

We're down to under 20 kids. In fact, we'll be lucky to get 10 - 12.

I've been doing this for years at my niece's house, they are famous (or imfamous) in more than the local neighborhoods. Hundreds of kids come by.

I give out tons of candy each year, and have a little fun with the laser. We used to dectorate a lot too, but since my daughter moved into her own place for college, it's not really the same anymore. Since I have to get up at 4 in the morning, the porch light gets turned off at 9, and the doorbell gets de-activated.
I am planning to be out with my 10" Dob as well. I have done this many times in the past. I think it is a great way to do a little outreach to the neighborhood. Having your neighbors know that you are into astronomy helps when you are trying to see something neat and need to go ask them to turn off their lights for a little while.
