I found this image of IC 1613 when I googled it. http://astro.nightsky.at/Photo/Gal/IC1613_Newton.html Debbie On Tue Sep 7 13:51 , Michael Vanopstall <opstall@math.utah.edu> sent:

According to Stephen James O'Meara, the sky has to be really clear to bag IC 1613. I'm going to try it next month at the Kolob Fingers section of ZNP. I marked it on Sky Atlas 2000 since it is not on chart #10. The Cave Nebula was a hard one but is more for imagers than visual observers. The Bubble Nebula is best seen with an OIII filter. I found Pac Man Nebula this weekend and it too benefits from an OIII filter.
I am very stupid about my Sky Atlas. I always leave it at home, despite the fact that the charts in O'Meara's Caldwell book leave something to be desired (they don't show enough context). So a good ten minutes of my time was spent figuring out which star in Pisces was epsilon! Meanwhile, that Atlas is at home.
The Bubble and the Crescent in Cygnus I used an O-III on, but only to check after I had thought I detected them without. Now, I definitely didn't pick out the Bubble itself, but some of the extent of the nebulosity was there. Even though I was at a dark site, I used a UHC to see the Cave. Again, I didn't see the cave feature, but saw about a 1-2 degree sliver of nebulosity. IC 1613 -- I have made two very concerted efforts. Both times I thought I saw the same thing. I absolutely pinpointed the field, and stood at the eyepiece each time for 15-20 minutes tapping the tube, breathing rhythmically, and moving the center of my FOV around. I checked the direction I thought I saw nebulosity against a photo and they agreed, so I count it as attained. I still have my doubts, and will probably revisit it each time I'm out. I think that I may have just caught a couple of 12-13th magnitude stars nearby that fooled me...

Hi all, Here's a view of an interesting barred spiral galaxy, NGC7476, which I made early Tuesday morning (9-7-2010) from Lakeside. It's a combination of exposures but I haven't added up how many. The color views aren't coming along well and I may not post one. I came across estimates for the galaxy's distance at 100 million and 105 million light-years. http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3751 Best wishes, Joe

I remember looking at IC 342 several years ago with a 20" Dob and a C-14. The C-14 had a big dewcap on it and we could see IC 342 in the C-14 but not the 20". Sky conditions may have been a factor but the Sky background was darker in the C-14 probably because of the baffling and the dewcap. IC 342 at only 10 million light years would be one of the brightest galaxies in the sky if it was not obscured by the Milky Way. I imaged it last weekend at Midway, UT along with NGC 891. Thanks, Tyler and Joe. The camera is the QSI 583 with a 150 mm refractor at f/5.7 (using a focal reducer). I combined 5 ten minute luminances for each image binned 1x1 and 5 each four minute RGB's binned 2 x 2. I would like to do longer exposures but my time was limited and I wanted to do more than one object. Hi Don, PEMPro, which regulates PEC, is an amazing tool. It has helped immensely. I still have some small problems with tracking, probably related to imperfect balancing, but when I get them worked out I'll be in much better shape. I'm excited about the improvement. Thanks, Joe
