How was the show? Any detail visible? It seems quite light at 5:30 A.M. Barney
Did anybody go to the Quarry Site? If so, how bad was the light pollution? I'm also wondering if anyone has tried to visit the Wasatch Plateau for observing, somewehre above the Wedge. Thanks, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Joe, Actually quite a few showed up Saturday night, and the weather gods were obviously pretty mean-spiritied that night. The die-hard optimists among us even got rained on. I finally packed it up after midnight, as the total overcast would not go away. Imagine my disgust to wake up to cloudless blue skies today. Sigh. But the site seems pretty good; some small amount of light pollution in the West, but not bad; overall a great site for being less than an hour from SLC (it's about an hour from my house in Lindon in Utah County having to drive thru Heber). I'll definitely try it again. -Rich --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Thanks, Rich! I actually drove there a day earlier to make sure I could find my way in the dark, and had no trouble. It's only a little more than half an hour from my home. Then last night I went outside before 10 p.m. intending to check out the star party. The overcast looked pretty discouraging so I didn't go. I think it's a really nice site if it's dark enough. Best wishes, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Rich, Joe, et al; I've been out of town this week end; talk about light pollution- San Diego... At any rate, I've been a big fan of the quarry for the past several years. It's a really good 'cheap' site; only half hour from the east side of Salt Lake. As long as you don't look too far west, you'll do okay with respect to light pollution. Biggest problem is deer and elk on the ride home. Yep, passed several deer by the side of the road coming in and out, and swerved to avoid something else -- a hulking grey shape, a badger or racoon perhaps, fairly big. Mosquitos were also a minor nuisance; bring bug repellent. San Diego's my home town. Gotta drive at least an hour East to get any decent observing down there. On the other hand, at 32 deg. latitude you can see Canopus (2nd brightest star) part of the year. Rich --- Joe Borgione <jborgion@yahoo.com> wrote:

This reminds me of something I had forgotten but which puzzled me at the time. When I was driving back from the quarry during the daylight, a large brown animal hopped along across the street and dove into the weeds. The strange thing is, I could not identify it. What it looked most like was a good-sized otter, complete with long tail. It definitely was not a fox or a dog or a cat. I'm at a loss to explain it -- a big sleek marmot with a long tail? What was it? -- Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Howdy! Basically it went very well. Mars is so bright that having a bright background tended to reduce the glare. More details and word on SPOC Mars Watches planned for later this month and next in tonight's "News". Patrick :-)
