Re: [Utah-astronomy] 45 years ago today: 16 July 1969
It's worse than sad. It's a giant betrayal of all the brave people who worked so hard, and those who died, to achieve the landings. In a way, I feel it's a betrayal of our species. ------------------------------ On Wed, Jul 16, 2014 5:36 AM MDT Chuck Hards wrote:

45 years. Has it really been that long?
And are humans still stuck in low Earth orbit? Sad.

It's not a race, we'll get there eventually. Manned space exploration is horrendously expensive, and we as a country have decided to spend our tax dollars on other things. When we stop killing each other as a species, we can spend a lot less on the military, and space exploration will accellerate. You tell me when that will happen. Sure, I'm disappointed that I won't be retiring on the moon or Mars, or vacationing on the orbiting Hilton, or taking a cruise to the moons of Saturn, but our descendants surely will. I'm good with that. On Wed, Jul 16, 2014 at 7:34 AM, Joe Bauman via Utah-Astronomy < utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

I too am glad to be old enough to remember those days. None of my colleagues were even born then! (though I hate being the oldest guy at work -- feeling like a damn dinosaur some days). Sigh. And unfortunately I'm too worried about getting the mortgage paid off, and seeing my kids end up in good relationships and economic situations to give space travel much thought nowadays. I suspect most folks have similar concerns/priorities. I wish it were otherwise. /R ________________________________ From: Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2014 8:33 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] 45 years ago today: 16 July 1969 Cruising around the moons of Saturn chomping on a frozen hot dog…what could be better? Jeez, no kidding, Rich! I can barely afford to buy food & gas, let alone worry about an under-funded space program. On Wed, Jul 16, 2014 at 10:44 AM, Richard Tenney via Utah-Astronomy < utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

For context, the entire 30-year cost of the US Space Shuttle program, every mission, was the equivalent of the 2008 AIG bailout. You could fund a crewed mission to Mars for half the cost of just the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter project. My point is that we in fact absolutely _can_ afford to explore space - but we have elected people who prioritize our nation's wealth elsewhere. -----Original Message----- From: Utah-Astronomy [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Chuck Hards Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2014 11:01 AM To: Richard Tenney; Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] 45 years ago today: 16 July 1969 Jeez, no kidding, Rich! Yep, Seth, that's pretty much what I alluded to in my prior post on the subject. It's not a national priority anymore. On Wed, Jul 16, 2014 at 3:47 PM, Seth Jarvis <SJarvis@slco.org> wrote:

It's not a POLITICIAN priority anymore. GIVING money away has turned into the priority. Buying votes and buying donations is the political endgame. The country doesn't mean a thing to the politicians, just getting re-elected and/or keeping their own party in power is. Hell, if they we willing to pull their greedy fingers out of the political cookie jar, we might would have real warp drive by now. -Barrett -----Original Message----- From: Utah-Astronomy [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Chuck Hards Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2014 4:29 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] 45 years ago today: 16 July 1969 Yep, Seth, that's pretty much what I alluded to in my prior post on the subject. Voters set the national priority. If we vote worthless representatives into office, well, we get the government we deserve. Can't blame anyone but ourselves. We are the ones who put them there. We are the ones who decide where the country goes. If we let others think for us, we need only look in the mirror to find the reason it's not the way we would like it to be. That's as far as I'll go with this. Good night. On Wed, Jul 16, 2014 at 8:18 PM, BWFlowers <BWFlowers@comcast.net> wrote:

Good point, Chuck. The solution is, as always: Throw the bums out. On Wednesday, July 16, 2014 9:00 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote: Voters set the national priority.
