Re: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Observing report from Rush Valley Tuesday
I found a great picture of NGC 3718 from the AOP at Kitt Peak, AZ. http://www.noao.edu/outreach/aop/observers/n3718.html Debbie ps - Patrick, are you still taking requests?

There are are many nice pairs in Ursa Major. Among my favorite pairs are the Arp galaxies NGC 3718 and NGC 3729. There is a nice picture of the pair in the May 2005 Sky and Telescope, page 79. It looked good in my 15" and great in Jim's 25" scope last month. The Arp galaxy NGC 3738 and NGC 3756 is also a nice pair, although they are not Herschel objects. I spent some time in Ursa Major last June looking at all the galaxies in the bowl of the Big Dipper.
I really like the little spiral galaxy NGC 3184 in Leo Minor too. It is a pretty easy starhop from Mu Ursa Majoris.

Hi all,
Four of us braved the cold Tuesday until frost crashed the party just after midnight. Transparency was so-so, the ground was perfectly dry, but the cold air brought very steady seeing, and the views of Jupiter's colorful festoons at 423x in the 16-inch (using my "new" $10 swap meet 6mm Celestron Ortho (thanks Patrick!)) were superb.
For me it was also a very productive night; I logged 34 more Herschel-400 objects, all galaxies (most of them in Leo Minor, Ursa Major and vicinity) save NGC 4361, a PNe in Corvus (central star was easy). Highlights were NGC 3294, 3432, 3813, 3877, 3675, 3726, 3198, 3184, and 3556 (aka M108). 7 of the log sketches show pairs of galaxies, not uncommon in this part of the sky.
The ground was nice and dry by the way, for any who might be wondering.
Thanks Tyler, Daniel and Robert for the great company!
-Rich
PS, expect more lovely images from Tyler to be posted in the next day or so...

Google has decided to compete with MapQuest and offer online mapping services, with a plus, satellite photos. The site is still in beta I think so some browsers make not work, try FireFox if yours doesn't. So with the Observors Guide to help I found these: Meteor Crater AZ, http://maps.google.com/maps?q=flagstaff,az&ll=35.030508, -111.023197&spn=0.105572,0.121365&t=k&hl=en Upheaval Dome: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=moab+ut&ll=38.422451, -109.913921&spn=0.101280,0.121365&t=k&hl=en Clearwater Quebec http://maps.google.com/maps?q=moab+ut&ll=56.040000, -74.050000&spn=1.620483,1.941833&t=k&hl=en Deep Bay Saskatchewan http://maps.google.com/maps?q=moab+ut&ll=56.400000, -103.050000&spn=0.405121,0.485458&t=k&hl=en Flynn Creek Tn http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=36.025457, -86.050072&spn=0.050640,0.060682&t=k&hl=en Pilot NWT http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=60.283000, -111.000000&spn=0.405121,0.485458&t=k&hl=en Sierra Madre TX http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=30.600000, -103.000000&spn=0.405121,0.485458&t=k&hl=en West Hawk Lake, Manitoba http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=49.760000, -95.183000&spn=0.101280,0.121365&t=k&hl=en

Looks like we both had the same idea. I had just found SPOC when your message with the SPOC URL arrived. great minds must think alike. :-) Fun that one can see both the new observatory and the old dome. Netscape 7.2 on my G-4 had a problem with some of the page's features but did show the picture. Safari handled it all just fine. I noted that all the links you sent had breaks in them so I had to cut and paste them into the address line and then remove the space before proceeding. Here's the link I used for SPOC. I'm interested to see if it comes through with a break too. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=stansbury+park,utah&ll=40.649049282073975,-112... Patrick

Don, Allen and I will be attending all four days. We will be bringing the 24 and the 16 inch scopes. We will have the scope trailer, which I believe they said we could leave in the parking area where the star parties will be held. We will need a campsite. Our Subaru Forester license plate is 216 XRL, the scope trailer license is 160 YYZ. Our phone number is 801-277-1479, and the e-mail address is bsi@xmission.com. Can anyone point me toward a pair of inexpensive mounting rings to hold a 4" diameter (reflector type) guide scope onto my main telescope? Or can you tell me where I can find some PVC piping of 5" diameter that I can slice into mounting rings? Many thanks, Joe
Joe, I've looked before but never found 5" PVC pipe. Some female fittings for 4" pipe might be large enough for you. Alternately, You might also try cutting out a small section of 6" pipe and regluing the two ends together to create a smaller diameter piece. This has worked well for me as long as the sections are short, say one to two inches. Remember, too that Chuck Hards is the PVC king. He has cut countless custom fittings from PVC pipe and sheets. You might want to call him. Hi Ki m, many thanks -- I haven't been able to find any 6" pipe either! But one place may be able to sell me the rings that would clip onto my weight offset bar. Best wishes, Joe
