While driving into SLC for last evening's star party the setting Sun poked through a hole in the clouds to the west allowing a brilliant beam of rad light to pass through. That in itself was pretty wild. But when that light hit and lit up several patches of virga the site was incredible. Of course the only camera I had with me was my iPhone and with a large truck behind me I couldn't stop safely so I just rolled down the window and got a quick shot with the iPhone. No surprise that the blurry picture does not do the scene justice but it does hint at just how nice it was to see red, glowing virga falling from the sky. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/virga.jpg patrick p.s. Star party at SPOC tonight. At least at this point SPOC's Clear Sky Clock is calling for clear skies not just for the star party but for a few hours after midnight and the near-peak of the Perseids.
