Just back from Bryce. GREAT skies down there last night. Happily they're supposed to stay that way for a few more days (both here and there). Regarding the Hawaii trip there was a couple from Maui at Bryce last night. I told them about the trip and learned that they live on an estate that they just might make available to the SLAS group. I reached for my phone to call Rob so they could speak only to find I did not have his number in my phone (bummer). So I gave them contact info so they can contact Ann (and eventually Rob) when they get home. As for getting around over there, they pointed out the obvious that to get from Haleakala observatory on Maui to the various observatories on the Big Island we'll have to cross a small piece of ocean. Up to now most have flown. However our new friends noted that a new high speed ferry is about to go into service. Apparently once it gets up to speed the whole thing will rise up out of the water on 3 small hydrodynamic surfaces. Sounds like fun. pw
An estate on Maui for SLASers? Sounds too good to be true. Also, crossing the English Channel on a hydroplane is one thing, crossing the ocean is another. I am skeptical. Rob and I will check all this out. I am getting so excited! When shall we go? I guess it may depend on when "our" estate is made available. Uh huh. Guy, where is the best diving in Hawaii? I have only gone warm-water diving so I am looking forward to a new experience. Glad you had a great time, Patrick, in Bryce. To all, please travel safely and report back to us non-Brycers. -A

Well if it doesn't work out we can all just stay at Rob's place. Right, Rob? :) To clarify, the couple I spoke with do not own the estate. Their relationship to the estate is much like Magnum PI's relationship to the estate he lived on.
When shall we go?
How's about sooner than later? Perhaps late this year (when it's snowing here).

I'll be interested in hearing Guy's opinion. I spoke with Linda Nelson out at Seabase. She has dived all over the world (even both poles) and said if one is in Hawaii anyway then go ahead and do some diving on the side but she'd never put a trip to Hawaii together just for diving. She noted cold water and less that terrific underwater views. So if we're going to put together another astronomy / dive trip, let's go back to Bonaire. pw
Oh I don't know, I received my combat diving certification in 1970 at Pearl Harbor and there are dive sites around the islands that are world class. Define cold? It's Hawaii, South Pacific. Visibility in the pristine dive locations is exceptional. Night diving in the lights of a dive boat with huge Manta Rays swarming you is a kick. K-Bay offers Hammer Heads shark diving. Sea turtles up the ying yang. Reef sharks galore! I'll put together a list of 5 star sites for those brave enough to dive Hawaii... For those advanced divers who want a real thrill, maybe go watch and feel the lava dump into the ocean... I think there used to be tours to watch that. I'll do some checking. I would love to see that. I understand that it's a bit sketchy on the safety side however. Isn't cold water definded by the diving industry as any water below 70 degrees? Hi Patrick spoke w/ Bob this AM and invited him up w/ his gang to view a Haleakala Sunset and observe some of our southern skies. He is w/ visiting family so I guess the 2 hr trip to get to the summit is optional (and then at least 2 hrs to get back National Parks have no guard rails and it is a windy mountain road = fun driving at night). Hawaii diving is OK but doesn't compare to Palau, South Pacific or the Great Barrier Reef. Like anyplace, it has its spots to enjoy. The water is OK too but not like a bath, but refreshing. Bonaire has observatories?? Having fun on Maui Rob
Rob Looks like a SLAS get together in Hawaii is going to happen! Thanks for the invite. I talked to my wife and sister in law and her husband and all of them are excited about coming up to the star party. We plan to leave about 5:00 tomorrow. See you there! Hawaii is cold? Surely you jest! I got certified in '75 in the submarine canyon off La Jolla Shores, where hitting the thermocline made my head ache in the 50-degree chill. Anything above 65 degrees is bath water folks! ;o) As to when we go, I'm casting my vote for next February (when I know I'll be good and sick of winter). ____________________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links. http://mobile.yahoo.com/mobileweb/onesearch?refer=1ONXIC
Hi all, here's my latest attempt -- the center of the Lagoon Nebula, taken early Friday morning in the Utah western desert. Hi Joe, Judging from the nice round stars it looks like you've figured out the problem you'd been having with tracking. Kudos! Just a suggestion but when you post a picture could you also include data like Scope, Focal length, Focal ratio, Camera, Exposure time(s)? Carpe Noctem! Thanks, Patrick Hummm -- Scope, Meade LX200 12"; focal length -- um, dunno, used a Meade reducer that is supposed to make it f/3 or f/5 depending on the attachment -- the odd thing is, I used the shorter one which I thought should have been f/3 but Meade says it's the f/5; focal ratio, I guess that's f/5; camera, SBIG ST-402; exposure time -- not sure, I used a bunch of luminosity photos and one short exposure each of rbg -- total probably 150 seconds. I used MaxIm DL to program and take the exposures, as well as to manipulate the image. Also some adjustments using Photoshop elements. -- Best wishes, Joe On Sat, 16 Jun 2007, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Aloha and Good Morning Ann I will help, just been real busy and haven't had time to reply. I was on the Extreme MakeOver site that was done here in Hawaii. Wild but fascinating, the family moved in yesterday. Patrick home phone is 808-572-6418 cell is 808-280-3577. The SuperFerry as it is called is only going to service Maui to Oahu for starters, then to Kauai and eventually to the Big Island. I would prefer that it go to the Big Island early after start up but as you know 'it's all about the money'. Plane flights are inexpensive if booked early, last month round trips were $18 for one day, usually $85. I don't know where these estate is BUT it could be killer as there are many areas that are 'Hawaii' and very charming. If it's Upcountry it will afford great island views and cooling trade winds, either way I'd say follow up on that, it's a real offering of Aloha. see ya's soon Rob
