Looks like the ISS is going to cross in front of the nearly full Moon next Wednesday the 4 at 7:02 p.m. as seen from a point very near the Stansbury exit off I-80. If the weather cooperates I plan on trying to watch and tape the event. Visitor's welcome. Patrick
Truckstop parking lot, perchance? C. --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net> wrote:

Have you reconned the area? Is it someone's yard or an unimproved field? --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net> wrote:

Not quite, but close.
The red star in the attached image shows the observing location while the truck stop is located on what the map shows as Pheasant Lane.

I only received the prediction tonight so I have not had a chance to look at the site. But I drive past it every day so I know that whole area is fenced pasture. However I'll probably just pull off the side of the road as the prediction says you can be as much as 4.5 km from the centerline and still see a transit. Interestingly, ISS crosses the terminator only seconds before the transit. So we should see it approaching and then fade just before the crossing. BTW, I'm working on a better map showing the centerline of the pass. Will get it out later. Patrick Chuck Hards wrote:

I've put together a JPG containing 3 images with red crosses showing the progression of the ground track as it crosses highway 36 south of the Stansbury exit off I-80 and north of SPOC. Find it at: http://planet.state.ut.us/temp/ISSTRACK04FEB2004.JPG The scale of each of the three images is such that an observer located anywhere within the images will see a transit but locating near the red crosses should cause the transit to cut right across the middle of the Moon. Patrick p.s. If anyone is up at this hour (Friday at 1:22 a.m. MST), the MER-B control room has just been polled and given the ok for MER-B to egress the lander. The actual command to perform the egress will not be given for a while yet.
