Okay, here is the link to an image I took of the sun yesterday at around 10:20am. http://www.flickr.com/photos/78182360@N02/7164979170/in/photostream/ Details of the image are in the description. You will notice two images in the photostream. They are the same image, except that one has the brightness set much higher than the other because your monitor may be set differently than mine. Enjoy! Great image Mat! Just a quick question for clarification of your technique you said you handheld your D40 to the eyepiece, the meta data says that you used a 32mm focal length so I'm assuming you were using a zoom lens? was it a Macro lens by chance or a regular telephoto? Thanks! Howard --- On Wed, 5/9/12, Hutchings, Mat (H USA) <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> wrote:

Thanks Howard. The lens is the basic, 18mm-55mm Nikkor for the D40. Simple zoom, not a macro, nor is it a "VR" lens. Thanks Mat! I'll have to try this during the week, I generally only shoot solar images at prime focus, I haven't tried afocal with my D7000. I'm trying to nail down my shooting process for the eclipse next week, I'm not sure if I want to use the telescope or just go wider with the 70-300mm, I might end up using both depending on the location I choose to shoot from. (meaning if it's easy to get the telescope set up there) --- On Wed, 5/9/12, Hutchings, Mat (H USA) <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> wrote:

Howard, be sure to give afocal imaging a try with your D7000. It might take some practice especially if you hand hold the camera. I was really lucky as that shot was the second one of the session and it was the best. I was hoping to take the image through my 22mm TV Panoptic, but the eye relief caused too much vignetting in the camera, so I switched to the 25mm Plossl which has very long eye relief. If you have a mount, or can rig one, that holds the camera right on the eyepiece it would be a great help. It was fairly complicated for me to hand hold and get everything lined up and not bump the scope at the same time. But when I saw the image on the camera's LCD, I knew it was a good one! Mat P.S. Do I see people making camera mounts for afocal imaging in the next ATM session?? -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Howard Jackman Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2012 11:35 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Solar image Thanks Mat! Fabulous shot Mat! Great resolution/super focus. You can start to see the granulation as well.
