Hi,
I will be attending the Great Basin Ntl. Prk event. Not having been to Lehman caves for 1/4 century is making me want to go. I've spoken with Kelly Carroll. They are doing a public observing program on Sat and Sun. So, anyone interested, come along.

Hello:
I'm looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at Capitol Reef this weekend. The viewing is at Panorama Point. This is one of the first viewpoint turnoffs after you enter the park from the west heading east from Torrey. I will be there Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights with the 20" Obsession.
Those of you who have never been to Capitol Reef will be in for a real treat. I have seen the darkest most spectacular skies anywhere at this park.
I noticed that Great Basin National Park is also doing something Labor Day Weekend. It's tough to have to make a choice as to which national park to go to. I've been to Great Basin to support their astronomy festival in the past. It was a couple of years ago that I enjoyed visiting with Seth Jarvis from the Clark Planetarium that was there with some of his family.
Capitol Reef is usually the "official" SLAS venue for the September and October private star parties because there is so much to do during the day and the night skies are so dark. This is not a public event, strictly for us to have a good time doing our own observing. Hope to see many of you there!

Look at some of the earlier posts here, there are several of us headed there, not sure of the count but at least 6, probably more than that as not everyone is on this list and not everyone has responded. Don, Are you staying over? I am looking at forecasts and the seeing and transparency look a tad better at Lakeside but the humidity out in the desert is going through the roof this weekend after about 1:00a.m.. Humidity at Wolf Creek will go up, but not real high and probably not until right before morning. I may go up and spend the night Friday, and observe Saturday night and come home Sunday . . . maybe stay Sunday night if I can gather the food (special diet). Just wondering who might be up there both nights. Jay On Wed, Sep 1, 2010 at 12:06 PM, Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:

Yeah, I figured that there was the possibility of there being more than one Lakeside designation when I looked at the SLAS Map site and then compared it to the Google map. The Google designation is a military base associated with Hill Field. I drove by it one time when they had the Great Salt Lake Pumps (aka Norm Bangerter's Folly) Open House back in 1987. I also had a brother-in-law, a former Hill Field civilian technician, that worked there. It looks like there needs to be a concensus as to where Lakeside is. I vote for the SLAS map. --- On Fri, 9/3/10, Troy Davidson <clandaith@gmail.com> wrote: From: Troy Davidson <clandaith@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Observing tomorrow, not tonight To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Date: Friday, September 3, 2010, 2:16 PM I'm heading to the one that is listed on the google maps. ++++++++++++++++++ Troy Davidson www.istroyworking.com On Fri, Sep 3, 2010 at 1:48 PM, M Wilson <astro_outwest@yahoo.com> wrote:

I just found this note in my email, with a heading that it somehow concerns SLAS. I wonder if this is a mistake. As far as I know, have never spoken to this person. Can anyone with SLAS figure out what is going on? Thanks, Joe It was very nice to speak with you on the phone today. We look forward to helping Salt Lake Astronomical Society to raise money through our website. Here is an overview of how we work and why this could be a great way to raise money. We have a daily deal website where each day we offer a new discounted deal to our customers. It may be a spa, dentist, restaurant, etc. As the people make a purchase we will set aside 15% of our profits for a local charity orcause. Each customer is linked to a different cause that they choose, not us. We can set you up, but we think if we work together we can raise even more money for you.If you will email and facebook out our deal then as the customer comes in they will be tagged to your cause. The more that you tell the more that will buy. In the first 30 days we will actually be giving the causes 100% of our profits. This gives you incentive to tell everyoneyou know so that you get the money. I'll give you an example. Our first deal is with Rocky Mountain Pizza. They are offer $20 worth of Pizza for only $10. Of that $10 we get $5, but in the first 30 days all of that would go to you. So ifyou got 100 people to sign up that day and buy a great deal then you just made your organization $500. By the way we have upcoming deals that could make you thousands of dollars in a single day. www.dealsthatmatter.com/successes.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpCelBxmHzA We are going live on September 13th and hope you will join us in raising money for your group. Explanation: I received a note back from Stephen Gardner, saying he had talked to Patrick and Patrick thought he should contact me. He started typing while he was talking to Patrick, hence the mistaken greeting. So it's not a fraud. Personally, I don't think this is the sort of fundraising SLAS should be involved in. Joe, since utah-astronomy has nothing to do with SLAS, this probably isn't the proper venue for it's discussion. I would suggest you bring it up with the other board members, privately. But just between you, me, and the rest of U-A, I agree with you. Sounds like a pyramid scheme. On 9/3/10, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

About 10 years ago a similar program was launched by local business, it seemed largely aimed at getting "non-profits" to send business their way. I put non-profits in quotes because the meeting I attended included many multi million dollar non-profits. It seemed contrary to SLAS Constitution as does this "scheme", as being the president at the time I declined SLAS participation.

Don,
Are you staying over? I am looking at forecasts and the seeing and transparency look a tad better at Lakeside but the humidity out in the desert is going through the roof this weekend after about 1:00a.m.. Humidity at Wolf Creek will go up, but not real high and probably not until right before morning. I may go up and spend the night Friday, and observe Saturday night and come home Sunday . . . maybe stay Sunday night if I can gather the food (special diet). Just wondering who might be up there both nights.

Joe, come to Wolf Creek. I suspect the seeing and transparency will be much better than Clear Sky Clock shows because of the altitude. I can second Don's assessment of the Wolf Creek sky. You loose a bit in the west to Salt Lake area Light Pollution but the other 2/3 are just fantastic. You have great southern, northern and eastern horizons. The altitude does help with both seeing and transparency but some get lightheaded so if you feel a touch light headed it's normal for Wolf Creek. I saw the weather forecast on Channel 4 (I think) last night, predicting a weak front moving in Sunday AM with some clouds that should last through Monday. If true, Friday and Saturday are the best bets for two out of the three nights of this extended weekend. Anyone else have other weather information? Yesterday I drove to Utah Valley for business and noticed some leaves already changing in Spanish Fork Canyon. Not the earliest I've seen, but fall is definitely just around the corner. I also went up to Skyline Drive for a little while last night. The seeing wasn't great, but it was clear - another beautiful night. It did get cold, though. By 9:30 temps had already dropped to mid to high 40's. Anyone going to higher altitudes this weekend should expect fall temps. Or just the usual late summer Utah weather. So I will probably stay to about 2 AM and head back. I plan on Friday for sure but haven't decided about Saturday night.
