Sitting in my library tonight I succumbed to the siren song of the first clear night skies in days so I opened the observatory and shot some pictures of a couple of targets of opportunity. It quickly became apparent the jet stream must be screaming overhead (later confirmed). The stars were were so bloated I decided working on today's issue of News would be more productive. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/POORSEEING001.JPG Maybe next time, patrick
Patrick, I noticed the same thing visually, decided to wait till tonight for first light on my very close to complete 15"f/3.7 truss dob. Wish me luck! Cheers David On 2008-12-30 07:16, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Patrick, What's the jet stream doing tonight? Today is so clear and fine that I'm hoping I can find somewhere to set up tonight, not too far from home. The jet stream continues to hover just north of us. Unfortunately, excellent sky transparency is often accompanied by turbulence under this condition.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/Region/US/JetStream.html shows it's still lurking nearby, somewhat north. Looks like it'll be pretty good for Jerry and Cindy. Maybe you could set up in their backyard? patrick On 30 Dec 2008, at 10:36, Joe Bauman wrote:

I was out last night as well with first 'real' light for a new Zhumell 8" dob (I took a quick peak at Venus a few nights ago during a break in the clouds). I was pleased with how the scope performed (I hope to write up a full review sometime soon, pretty good bang for the buck thus far), though I couldn't seem to get stars down to pinpoints, just small blobs. Could that be caused by the Jetstream turbulence you mention? I chalked it up to needing to collimate better (or needing a better collimator), but it would be encouraging to know that it was potentially just bad seeing. Yes, especially since you're talking about last night (Monday the 29th) when all the stars in my images were huge blobs. Looking forward to getting a gander through it at a star party. patrick
Hi folks, I have been trying out a photo-posting service that came with our Qwest Internet connection. Here are some astro-related pics I took, including one of an ATK space shuttle and/or moon rocket motor test. I'm fond of the fourth one, which shows planetary nebula NGC 2438 and open cluster M46. I just happened to stumble upon it telescopically, and took a few images, which I stacked. Best wishes, Joe https://cid-9fa170f11315b55f.skydrive.live.com/browse.asp/Joe%20Bauman|4s%20astrophotos
Dead link....try again for the insomniac in Massachusetts! Thanks! On Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:02 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com>wrote:
