What astro memorabilia do you have? What's the oddest thing in your collection? I have several, probably the most off-the-wall is Tom Cave's breakfast-cereal box. No lie. I also have Harlow Shapley's autograph. What's tucked-away on your shelf or closet?
Autographs and photos I took of some of the coolest astronauts including Alexi Leonov, the first man to walk in space. Photos I took in the '60s of missile launches. A chip of rusted iron from a V2 (if it's still around -- I haven't seen it in decades). I used to have chunks of solid rocket propellant from a Nike Zeus missile that exploded over our island, but eventually, many years after I returned to the States, I gave them to someone at Thiokol who disposed of them for me. Pictures and notes I took of the first moon-landing and another landing. A tape recording I made of one of the Rangers landing on the moon I think in 1965. -- jb ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 27, 2011 2:45 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Astronomy memorabilia What astro memorabilia do you have? I have an actual piece of the Apollo 11 command module. I scraped a bit off of it when it was on display at the capitol building decades ago. OK, it's probably re-entry ash, but it still counts. A guard yelled at me and chased me out of the trailer. I met Leonov and all the Apollo-Soyuz crew. I gave him a model I made of the Apollo and Soyuz capsules linked together, that I had built. I have 8mm movie footage of their visit to SLC in the '70's. One day I'll transfer it to DVD. I have the newspaper clipping of the time we met. I sketched the mission patch and all 5 crew members signed it. :-) On 12/27/11, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

Chuck, I thought I was the only one that scraped ash off the bottom of Apollo 11. I worried for weeks that I would have got caught. I wish I had known then that you did it too and I would have just blamed you! Not strictly astronomy related. You can't see very well, but this cloud was concave downward and very nasty tendrils on the downwind (eastern) side. Stay away from these clouds! http://s1138.photobucket.com/albums/n534/brentjwatson/?action=view¤t=L...

I was flying my 182 at 10,500 feet MSL. When I went under the clouds I decended to 10,000 feet. ________________________________ From: Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 12:04 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Lenticular cloud over Mt. Some years ago, before Astro-mart, before eBay, before the internet actually, there was this little classified shopper magazine called "The Starry Messenger", devoted to astro gear. I bought some now long-forgotten item from Tom Cave (founder and owner of Cave Optical Company) and he sent it to me in a cereal box. I still have the box, with his return-address label on it, and "FRAS" hand-printed after his name. Tom passed away some years ago, but is still remembered by old-timers. In addition to telescope manufacturing, he was a keen planetary observer and mover and shaker in the amateur community in the Los Angeles area for decades. I believe many other SLASers met him and spoke with him over the years.
I have a 13" mirror made and signed by John Dobson. I also have a very old refractor objective, although I can't put an exact date on it. My guess is around 100 years old or more. ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 27, 2011 2:45 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Astronomy memorabilia What astro memorabilia do you have?
