Friday night at the Wedge
Went down to the Wedge on Friday, along with Steve Roens and Cheryl Hart (occasional SLAS members). Great night. There was just enough of a breeze to keep the no-see-ums away. Not too many people and none of them used external lighting. Never got any cooler than sweatshirt weather. You could tell it was going to be a good night when we put our scopes on Saturn--well before pure dark. I could see what appeared to be 7 moons--not counting Titan. That's with a 10" scope. I've checked in Starry Night, and can see no field stars in equivalent positions. These objects were all very close to the planetary disk. The rest of the night went pretty much the same way. M101 was also visible before full dark. Altogether a satisfying night. I've heard that folks in the club don't like to head to the Wedge after April, but there was really nothing to complain about this time. MC
I considered going to the Wedge Friday night but worried that my generator would bother follks, so I went to the West Desert. That was a spectacular night for clear skies. Not so good for my astrophotography. I'll try again during the week as I have taken some time off for the new moon. I'm surprised the Wedge wasn't cold Friday night, as I suffered miserably at my site. When I left home that afternoon it was so warm I didn't worry about a coat or sweater, of which I repented later! -- Joe
Speaking of cold, I still remember the words of my D.I. he said: "Give a man fire and he will be warm for the night. Set him on fire and he will be warm the rest of his life." ;) Quoting Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com>:

Guy what I didn't tell you was their day at Pendleton doing boot camp w/ screamin' gunnies. The daughter Sophie 14 did pretty good while ol' Gene was huffin' and a puffin'. The daughter did the 25ft jump into the pool while Gene opted for a smaller jump w/ pack and gun, he tried and then later put on the show. It was good!! RR

Have you considered bringing your astrophotography gear out to SPOC during one of the members only star parties? Perhaps if several of us work on the problem we can come up with possible solutions. And no need to bring your generator, just bring an extension cord. pw
Patrick, I am really, truly on the verge of fixing it -- I think. If not, that's a great idea. Thanks, Joe
