Hi Mat, I might decide to go to Pit'N'Pole on Thursday, come home to rest and recharge my batteries Friday and return on Friday night. It's close enough that this wouldn't be a problem and I think I can get away with not using the generator that way -- instead I'll be using my new deep-cycle marine battery to run the laptop. Jay and I are planning an outing together and I think we may all wind up at P'N'P at least Friday night. Thanks, Joe --- On Wed, 3/30/11, Hutchings, Mat (H USA) <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> wrote:

Observing Thursday or Friday, I will be coming out to Pit-N-Pole on one of those nights. Depends on the weather. The weather on TV at 6 looked like Friday would be the best night. I have never been to Pit-N-Pole. I have looked up the instructions on the SLAS site and it seems a little hard to find to me. Is Pit-N-Pote a good area to observe from? Looking forward to getting some observing in, This will be the first time out this season for me. Sounds like a good time. It's a good site in terms of distance from SLC; there are better sites that are hours farther. Here are mileages that can help you find it: Pit’N’Pole location: 40 12 26 N, 112 16 00 W Pit ‘n’ Pole Directions From the Tooele city hall, heading south on Utah 36, it’s 27.1 miles to Faust. On the right (west) of the highway is a marker for the Old Pony Express Trail; turn left onto the trail heading east. At 9.2 miles from that turnoff you'll come to a small road sign, like a mile marker, that says "PA 3." Turn right there onto a dirt road. After 0.3 miles make another right onto a side road. A short distance farther and you're at Pit'N'Pole. -- Joe --- On Wed, 3/30/11, Mark Shelton <woodturninginc@yahoo.com> wrote:

Yes, I have an iPad. I have two software apps that will do the job and it works in the backyard but I haven't tried it in the field yet. I personally prefer StarMap Pro since I can get down pretty low to obtain certain objects. On Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 10:09 PM, Jay Eads <jayleads@gmail.com> wrote:

It depends on which direction you're going. My directions are from the SLC side of things. If you're coming from the Utah County side you'd turn left, but then, all the mileage indicators are different and you don't go near Faust. I will be coming out to Pit-N-Pole on one of those nights.

Oh, I see. I didn't see Joe's reply. Still working the kinks out on my iPad. My directions are if your coming from Lehi/ I-15. On Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 10:13 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com>wrote:
It depends on which direction you're going. My directions are from the SLC side of things. If you're coming from the Utah County side you'd turn left, but then, all the mileage indicators are different and you don't go near Faust. Thanks, Joe

It's a good site in terms of distance from SLC; there are better sites that are hours farther. Here are mileages that can help you find it:
Pit’N’Pole location: 40 12 26 N, 112 16 00 W
Pit ‘n’ Pole Directions
From the Tooele city hall, heading south on Utah 36, it’s 27.1 miles to Faust.

Mark, I have the direction to Pit n Pole located here at my blog http://jaysastronomyobservingblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/pit-n-pole-directions... It also has pictures so you can see what it is like during the day. Warning, humidity can get high out there so if you have a dew heater bring it. Better to not need it than to need it. Skies are looking good (really good since I haven't been out since Feb. for a full night) for tomorrow night so I'll be there with a friend, and then if it holds up I'll be there for Friday night as well. The low each night about 40-44 degrees F and it can get cold out there. High pressure is moving in tonight and that is moving the jet stream to the east of us so things could end up being quite decent. Mark, just let me know if you want to meet at Walmart. I may move the time up depending on when I can get out of the school/work. If you want to meet on Friday, I'll be leaving Herriman on Friday around 5:00p.m. and be driving past the Walmart at 5:30p.m. so if you or anyone else wants to meet there to drive out that would work. Here is the NWS Forecast for SLC and Tooele Valleys as of 9:01p.m. Lets hope two days of good weather for observing is going to occur near a new moon (I'll take the thin waning crescent right now). .REST OF TONIGHT...MOSTLY CLOUDY IN THE EVENING THEN BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY LATE. LOWS IN THE LOWER 40S. .THURSDAY...PARTLY CLOUDY. WARMER. HIGHS IN THE LOWER 60S. .THURSDAY NIGHT...MOSTLY CLEAR. LOWS NEAR 40. .FRIDAY...SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 60S. .FRIDAY NIGHT...PARTLY CLOUDY. LOWS IN THE UPPER 40S. On Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 8:39 PM, Mark Shelton <woodturninginc@yahoo.com>wrote:
