I'm really curious about how they were able to do the lander as seen from above, 360 degree shot. Does it have a boom with a fish-eye lens camera? -----Original Message----- From: Patrick Wiggins [mailto:paw@trilobyte.net] Sent: Sun 1/4/2004 12:49 AM To: Utah Astronomy Cc: Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Re: 1st pix Happy to oblige. I just wish they'd put the images on the web NOW. They just showed a mosaic showing a 360 degree panorama and the lander as seen from above. It just keeps getting better and better. I think the only thing that could make it better would be if Mars Express picks up a signal from Beagle later today. If only my life were going this well. :-) WOW!!! They just sent some guy up on a ladder (remember, just like the Moon landings this is all being faked in some movie studio in Area 51). But seriously, the camera boom on the rover extends up to about 2 meters above the surface and with that they shot a whole slew of pictures looking down and to the sides in all directions and then stitched them together in Photoshop. BTW, there's another news conference scheduled for 01:30. No doubt they'll show more pictures then. It's getting easier to log onto NASA TV on the web since it's getting late and normal people are going to bed. Try it by going to http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/MM_NTV_Web.html and clicking on "Watch NASA TV now". BTW, if anyone wants to sign up for Dish Network cheap (and have NASA TV for the next landing) I've got an extra receiver and dish that I'd be willing to part with for a small donation to the new refractor building at SPOC. Plus as a current subscriber I see I can provide a card they send me that would cover the cost of installation. Anyone interested, please let me know. Patrick
