Adios, Night Sky
This from Patrick's "News": Night Sky Magazine to Cease Publication Sky Publishing has decided to stop producing Night Sky, its bimonthly magazine for beginning amateur astronomers http://skytonight.com/news/4884391.html I'm not surprised. This was an unnecessary magazine in the first place, and I thought it strange that S&T would essentially compete against itself. S&T has drifed-away from the professional "feel" it once had some 30 years ago, and is now very much a magazine for the masses- it resembles Astronomy magazine more than the semi-professional journal that it once was, in a successful attempt to boost circulation. I remember that Astronomy was originally marketed as "The Most Beautiful Astronomy Magazine". It was aimed squarely at the novice & intermediate amateur, S&T leaned toward the advanced amateur and professional. These days there is much less difference between the two. There is plenty of editorial content geared toward the novice in S&T already and that made Night Sky redundant. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Cheap talk? As an amateur's amateur I have thoroughly enjoyed the Night Sky Magazine since its inception. It has been written for my level of interest and understanding and become my main connection with what's going on in the night sky. Too bad there weren't more folks/subscribers like me. I'll miss it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuckhards@yahoo.com> To: "Utah-Astro" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2006 7:07 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Adios, Night Sky

I'm with Gary on this one, and also with Chuck -- I think people with all levels of interest and expertise should have publications to encourage them. We all start out knowing nothing, and everybody can learn. I find S&T and Astronomy interesting and fun, and I don't need any magazine more technical because I'm not that specialized in my interests or that accomplished in astronomy. When we were starting out, it was all pretty intimidating, and if I had known about Night Sky I probably would have liked to read it. For others who are advanced beyond my stage, the old-style S&T sounds about right. -- Joe

Gary, understand that I didn't say it was a bad magazine- heck, I was a minor contributor and they actually sent me a check! I thought it redundant. Everthing ever printed in it has already been printed many times in S&T, Astronomy, and various Web sources. The trouble with strictly entry-level material is that the same subjects must be repeated over and over. Long-time subscribers of any of the astronomy magazines will of course notice this. I'll concede that as a convenience it may have had it's place. But I'm sure that you will be ready for something more, perhaps sooner than you think. --- Gary Thompson <agaryt@mstar.net> wrote:

I'm sure you are right. I did see a lot of repeated material within the magazine itself. I have filed most of the more interesting articles myself. I may be ready to step up to one of the monthly magazines. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuckhards@yahoo.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2006 11:17 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Adios, Night Sky

I subscribed to Night Sky for my 11 year old son Ammon who is showing a fair amount of interest in astronomy - so I'm disappointed to see it going away. I've been very pleased with Astronomy magazine as of late. They have had some pretty "meaty" topics and I've been impressed with the article authors they have used. They seem to use authorities in the various areas covered, i.e. GRB's, magnetars, cosmology, etc. On the other hand, I've been a bit less impressed with S&T this past year. I realize this is a personal taste issue, but, I think they have had too many, "we've discovered where artist ABC painted picture XYZ" articles. Clear skies, Dale.

Agreed, Dale. I'm also very disappointed that Telescope Making is no longer a monthly department. I actually didn't renew my subscription 2 years ago and went totally without the magazine in 2005. I re-subbed for 2006 but find that unlike the old days, when I'd grab it out of the mailbox and have it completely read that same evening, it now sits for days, weeks before I pick it up. I'm sure that I have changed as much as the magazine, but it just doesn't hold my interest like it used to- I'd much rather be at the eyepiece anymore, than involved in a passive activity or re-reading the same old cosmology article with different numbers plugged-in, or why the sky was red when Moench painted an over-rated painting. --- Dale Hooper <Dale.Hooper@sdl.usu.edu> wrote:
