Leaving Salt Lake City on Sunday and stopping at the Flying J in Scipio (someone needed a potty break) the store and parking lot was packed. According to the cashier, everyone was headed to southern Utah for the eclipse. Driving back t hrough Parawan from Cedar Breaks around 9:00 p.m. , my group caught I-15 and headed to Cedar City for dinner. The stream of cars leaving Cedar City and headed north was a sight to be hold. Both lanes packed, almost bumper to bumper, white headlights heading toward us as far as could be seen . It was too dark to get a picture. The g u ess is a lot of people did a quick and dirty, drive down and back in one day. (Which made the appalling "orange barrel polka" just outside of Nephi by UDOT that much more appalling. Traffic was reduced to one lane and the bottle neck was the most vile ever seen. It took us ONE HOUR to get through it. A number of cars and semis had just pulled off and went to sleep.)
I only heard one other vehicle - a 172 from Cedar City to U42. We had no traffic problems at all. ________________________________ From: "jcarman6@q.com" <jcarman6@q.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 25, 2012 11:53 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Transit "bennie" / Eclipse impact Leaving Salt Lake City on Sunday and stopping at the Flying J in Scipio (someone needed a potty break) the store and parking lot was packed. Glad I missed it, the more I hear the more I'm glad I didn't go with the "crowd". I did notice no traffic police on sunday noted many on monday. Traffic cones will be a fact for another year.
Heard 1,500 at Grand Canyon, SL Tribune reported 10,000??? at Kannaraville (photographs did not show that). How many at Bryce? Did they all take their Bryce Eclipse glasses and leave?

That traffic jam was totally unnecessary. There was not one bit of work being done. On May 25, 2012 1:21 PM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:

"How many at Bryce? Did they all take their Bryce Eclipse glasses and leave?" I haven't heard an official total for visitors on Sunday but based on other numbers I'm guessing that we had between six and eight thousand people here for the eclipse. Some may certainly have picked up their free eclipse glasses and left, but their numbers would have to be very few. Out of the eight thousand glasses that we bought, one thousand were sold at the visitor center beginning a week prior to the eclipse and the rest were made available for free after 2:00 Sunday afternoon. We had about one thousand left over to be used for the Venus transit but we also asked families and larger groups of people to share glasses so that we would not run out. I'd say six thousand minimum is a conservative estimate. Kim

I spoke to Kevin before my program last evening and he said the official head count for Bryce Canyon for eclipse day was just over 10,000. Officials at Kanarraville drove the road between their two exits of I-15, the road to New Harmony and the dirt road that lead past the official observing field counting cars. They put the count at 15,000. My contact at the Cedar visitors bureau said hotels still had rooms available a few days before but filled up by eclipse day by people who just showed up with no reservations. She also said one person made $7000 selling snow cones in Kanarraville. Another, took a risk and ordered 2000 t-shirts. He found the cheapest $2-3 shirt and sold out at $20 a t-shirt. That's $40,000 dollars!!!!! patrick
I don't know how you'd get a good estimate by looking at pictures from Kanarraville because the visitors were spread out over both sides of nine miles of highway according to the Tribune, plus thousands more in the special camping site that was set up. I heard that someone was walking around with a box of eclipse glasses and said he sold out all 2,000 in the first hour. All the T-shirts had been sold (except a few of an unexciting design) before first contact. I don't know that anybody made a good head count by driving along the road and estimating. After the eclipse we had dinner beside the road and the cars drove past for a long time. We had no trouble with traffic backups because we spent Sunday night in Cedar City and went home the next day. -- Joe ________________________________ From: "erikhansen@thebluezone.net" <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 25, 2012 1:20 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Transit "bennie" / Eclipse impact

No, we're not missionaries -- Regarding head counts, I was responding to the comment questioning the Trib's crowd estimate and the comment that photographs didn't show that number. I was speaking as an ex-reporter, not a missionary, to the specific question about how many were there. That's an interesting question. Crowd estimates are usually done for any kind of public event. I was curious as anything as to how many people went out, but now I'm thinking ahead for 2017... 2,000 pair of eclipse glasses sold by one individual? There's a pile to be made off a total eclipse! On Fri, May 25, 2012 at 3:01 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

If you want to order the good T-shirts, I have a phone #. On May 25, 2012 2:52 PM, "Joe Bauman" <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

All the T-shirts had been sold (except a few of an unexciting design) before first contact. I don't know that anybody made a good head count by driving along the road and estimating. After the eclipse we had dinner beside the road and the cars drove past for a long time. We had no trouble with traffic backups because we spent Sunday night in Cedar City and went home the next day. -- Joe

The g u ess is a lot of people did a quick and dirty, drive down and back in one day.Â
(Which made the appalling "orange barrel polka" just outside of Nephi by UDOT that much more appalling. Traffic was reduced to one lane and the bottle neck was the most vile ever seen. It took us ONE HOUR to get through it. A number of cars and semis had just pulled off and went to sleep.)  _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy

Looking at pictures of field looked like a few hundred cars with people among the cars. Did hear the reports that the highway following center line was packed. Walked my dog before the eclipse went by many large grassy parks, in Cedar City, with zero people.

The highway following the center line was empty. Perhaps there was a car every 1/2 mile, but more like a car every mile. ________________________________ From: "erikhansen@thebluezone.net" <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2012 8:08 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Transit "bennie" / Eclipse impact
