Re: [Utah-astronomy] OT: Recommended SciFi
It came recommended to us by a friend also. Surprisingly good. All 12 episodes. Shows you what the network folks know. I can't believe they cancelled it. We will definitly go see it in the theatres and would also recomend it. -------------- Original message --------------
Just finished watching the DVD set of "Firefly", a series that ran less than a season on Fox a couple of years ago (I completely missed it then). But on the encouragement of some colleagues at work, I borrowed the set (13 episodes on 4 disks).
In a word, fabulous.
Funny, hip, sometimes intense, and different. And despite being cancelled by Fox executives (who clearly don't have a clue about what works), there is a huge fan following worldwide, and the creator (Joss Whedon of "Buffy" fame) went and made a movie anyway. "Serenity" (the name of the Firefly-class ship, with the same cast from the TV-series Firefly) will be in theaters opening the end of this month. Anyway, check it out -- I think you'll enjoy it. My wife even watched the whole thing with me and liked it as well (a rare thing for her with SciFi).
One caveat, this is definitely PG-13 fare, intended for adults.
You can see the movie trailer here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/serenity/

I also enjoy Firefly. I caught the tail-end of the series when it came out a couple years ago, and I'm rewatching it now on Sci Fi on Fridays at 5pm... right before the Stargate's and BSG. Oh, Fridays are fun! ;) Cyn steve.nielsen@comcast.net wrote:

I have watched through disk 2 of the set so far, and I must say that it is quite good. At first I thought the strange mix of western and Sci-fi would be hokey but for this show it works well. Completely inappropriate for children, at times I wonder if it was the borderline HBO style that got it pulled from network television and not the ratings. Watch it and replace all the invented sci-fi profanity with present day expletives and it would be right at home next to The Sopranos and Deadwood.

It's actually not "invented profanity" at all -- it's real Chinese profanity! 500 years into the future, the two superpowers, US and China, prevailed. Everyone can speak both English and Chinese. The crew mostly save the Chinese for swearing, though "Gorramit" may be invented. Works for me either way; better than hearing real swear words. I'm sure that Guy especially would enjoy it. Lots of guns... ;o) --- Jon Christensen <coldari@msn.com> wrote:

Love the series also... And for those who are interested, its marathon day on SciFi tomorrow. Showing all episodes back to back. Set the TiVos on stun. James. Richard Tenney wrote:

We are out of town, once again, for meeting night. Could someone please remind Siegfried to open the upper door of the church so that those who need to use the elevator can get into the building? The front door is the one that is part of a double door leading to the street. I would e-mail Siegfried directly, but I do not have his address with me. Thanks! Jo
