I don't think that's rotation you're seeing, I think it's an aliasing artifact in the digital image. Try this: 1 - Import Patrick's image into Photoshop 2 - Sample the color of the line that bisects the image 3 - Select the Photoshop line tool and set the line width to two pixels, which approximates the width of the original line in the image. 4 - Now draw a parallel line right next to the original line. In my case, I made it about 1/2" below the anomalous line. 5 - Zoom the image to 200% and take a look at both lines. The aliasing matches exactly. Conclusion: The object that photobombed Patrick's image wasn't tumbling, that's just an artifact of the image's digital processing. "Aliasing artifact"... Souds like hooey and doubletalk. I smell a government conspiracy. ;-) Seriously, thanks Seth, I think you've found the ghost in the machine. Good sleuthing. On Thu, Oct 30, 2014 at 12:15 PM, Seth Jarvis <SJarvis@slco.org> wrote:

Yes, probably some sort of satellite. But being a die hard Star Trek geek I still like Dave's suggestion of it being part of a Tholian Web. :) patrick On 01 Nov 2014, at 12:57, Joe via Utah-Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

I was able to exactly recreate the "rotating" pattern of this satellite in Photoshop. No question it's a satellite, but the apparent changing in brightness as the object traverses the field of view is a function of software trying to smooth the stairstep pattern of pixels on a grid while rendering a diagonal line. The process is called antialiasing.
