I have the Clark/Bogdan refractor scheduled for Monday, June 4th, 2010 (forecast is looking outstanding according to the Clear Sky Clock Stansbury Park ClearSky Clock <http://www.cleardarksky.com/c/SPOC2UTkey.html?1> and AccuWeather Tooele Astronomy Forecast <http://www.accuweather.com/us/ut/tooele/84074/outdoor-astronomy.asp>); looks to be shaping up to be a great night. With me will be a friend, Steve Coe, author, amateur astronomer, and a long-time, prominent member of the Saguaro Astronomy Club in Phoenix, AZ. Steve has written two books for Springer publishing. The first, *Deep Sky Observing: The Astronomical Tourist*, and the second, *Nebulae and How to Observe Them*. He has also written several articles for *Astronomy* magazine and a monthly column for the Cloudy Nights website, among a regular column for Amateur Astronomy. The focus will be on the planets that are visible (Venus, Mars, Saturn), some doubles that Steve is pulling from the Saguaro database and some globular clusters. So if you want to come out and have a look feel free to drop by or bring a scope and set up that works too. Jay

Hi All, I had the greatest astrophotography night of my life so far, last night. It was the second of two nights I spent at the Wedge. Friday night was a total, exhausting bust. During that, I didn't realize I was slewing Baby at an angle where it got the focuser jack jammed under one of the arms. Then it wouldn't move. Trying to work the jack out without getting the scope out of alignment, I managed to break off the jack. Then somehow I lost it. These events turned out to be lucky, because I did fine without the miserable focuser, and without those extra pounds sticking out of the end of the OTA, on Saturday night I was able to balance the scope easily. The telescope performed beautifully, and even tracked and guided properly. So I got some nice photos that I'll be posting. Both nights were stunning, especially after the moon set. -- Best wishes, Joe
Joe, Sounds like a wonderful evening and I look forward to seeing your photos. I've been under the weather so there was no viewing for me this weekend. On Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 10:39 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com>wrote:

Aloha Joe Good photo you ever try stacking 1/2 dz or so?? I think that would bring out more detail and sparkle for that gem Yok we yok Rob
Thanks, Rob, this one is stacked, but I shot it just before I got my guider working, so I couldn't take long enough individual exposures. The one I'm putting in now, of the Lagoon Nebula, was taken after the guider got into the act. But I found that a longer individual exposure for the Lagoon wouldn't work out because the bigger stars flared. Anyway, here's the Lagoon Neb: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3470 I should have worked harder on focus, but I'm improving, I think. Hi Joe are you using a Hartmann mask to focus?? I know getting good focus w/ sct's is a tough project and it takes lots of work to get images that are stunning most of the astro-images that are spectacular tend to be from dedicated imaging gear or refractors (read money) bottom line Have Fun Aloha Rob
Aloha Rob, I would like to get one, if that's the kind that is sort of spiky. I made a cheapo mask out of cardboard that helps somewhat -- just three holes in it, and when the star images merge it's focused. But it's hard to use.
