Hey you old guys with big scopes! I saw this on KSL and I thought about it but I’m not quite ready “yet”. If you are you might be able to use this. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=20418087&cat=&lpid=7&search=telescop...
Seth, I am going to purchase a full aperture glass solar filter for my refractor. I just called your gift shop and was told you do not sell them. I thought I remembered you mentioning that you did. I would needd one that fits on the outside or inside of a 10" O.D. tube with a 1/16" wall. I only need an 8" clear aperture. Do you have such a beast? Thanks, Brent
Brent, We could certainly order something for you, but we wouldn't have it here by June 5. What will _will_ have here shortly (end of week) are large sheets of Baader solar filter. For not a lot of money I suspect you'd have no difficulty building a full-aperture filter for your telescope. Thousand Oaks - yep, that'd be a good choice. I just got through answering another question about why we don't stock h-alpha filters or Coronado telescopes, and I think that answer applies here, too. In the age of the internet, knowledgeable amateur astronomers seeking specialized accessories for their telescopes almost always buy online and are willing to wait a couple of days for the UPS truck - they almost never come down here to talk to us about their accessories. I wish we had the demand for the kind of full-service full-stocked telescope store you find in L.A., but the Salt Lake area market is just too small and the internet makes it so easy to get exactly to doo-dad you want at Amazon prices. Brent, we already sell science toys on Amazon. The volume on those items is good. I'll ask my store manager about what would be involved in carrying more telescope accessories online. Question for you folks: I suspect that our volume on specialty telescope accessories would be low and therefore our prices would be more like retail list price rather than the discounts offered by large online retailers. Would you still buy from us? It is an intriguing idea, though, and one worth exploring. Thanks, Seth Sent from my iPhone On May 22, 2012, at 6:25 PM, "Brent Watson" <brentjwatson@yahoo.com> wrote:

Price is king these days. Money is always at a premium - at least for me. The reason I asked about filters originally was that I wanted to support local business, and the planetarium specifically. I would probably pay some premium, but not a lot. One of the gripes I have with Skypark airport is that their fuel price is significantly higher than anywhere else around. I'll fly 100 miles for a lower fuel price, and I can usually beat the local price by $.75 to $1.00. In addition, I get to fly to do so. If their price was only slightly higher I would be more inclined to buy my fuel locally. The same would hold true with telescope accessories. I know we work hard to keep our (Sky Spot) prices on the internet at rock bottom except for our books where we protect our dealers. So, are you a Thousand Oaks Optical dealer? It turns out that there are no glass filters anywhere to be found. (Surprise!) If I want one I'll have to order it, and it won't come until after the transit anyway. ________________________________ From: Seth Jarvis <SJarvis@slco.org> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 6:49 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Solar Filter (Again) Brent, we already sell science toys on Amazon. Seth, Do you know whether those sheets of Baader solar filter have arrived yet? I'm hoping to make a filter for my daughter's Astroscan for the upcoming transit. Will the film just be in the gift shop, or do I need connections? Thanks, Richard Curtis

Seth,
Do you know whether those sheets of Baader solar filter have arrived yet? I'm hoping to make a filter for my daughter's Astroscan for the upcoming transit. Will the film just be in the gift shop, or do I need connections?
Thanks, Richard Curtis

Brent,
We could certainly order something for you, but we wouldn't have it here by June 5.
What will _will_ have here shortly (end of week) are large sheets of Baader solar filter. For not a lot of money I suspect you'd have no difficulty building a full-aperture filter for your telescope.

Seth,
I am going to purchase a full aperture glass solar filter for my refractor. I just called your gift shop and was told you do not sell them. I thought I remembered you mentioning that you did. I would needd one that fits on the outside or inside of a 10" O.D. tube with a 1/16" wall. I only need an 8" clear aperture. Do you have such a beast?

Steve (and all Baader-fans), The Baader solar filter material arrived today. Our store manager, Mike, has to measure, calculate, cut, package and price the Baader stock before we can sell it. I sent Mike recommendations about sizes this morning, and one of my recommendations was for 25cm squares. We're going to try to accommodate most popular scope sizes. I don't know pricing yet; that's not my call to make. Mike will be in Monday morning (yes, he will be there on Memorial Day) to get the material ready to sell. Here's what I recommend: if you folks want to email me _directly_ what you're looking for in the way of Baader filter for solar viewing, I'll make sure that your requests get stirred into Mike's plans for the inventory. Whew! We got the Baader solar filter stock late on Friday and our staff spent way too much time over the weekend figuring out how best to slice the stuff up and package it for sale. Here's what they've come up with: 12.6" x 12.6"= $34.95 10.6" x 10.6"= $24.95 9.8" x 9.8" = $19.95 9.0" x 9.0" = $19.95 7.1" x 7.1" = $14.95 4.9" x 4.9" = $12.95 90mm squares for binoculars are $18.90 per pair. Each piece comes with a printed copy of instructions on recommended ways to use the material to construct a frame for use with your telescope or binoculars. Add $4.95 for shipping if you want us to mail it to you. If you want to place and order and pay with a credit card, please call the store: 385-468-1264.
NOTE<<<
Those of you who have communicated specific requests for Baader filter directly to me should be receiving an email today about your order from Mike Sheehan, our store manager. And it's worth repeating... Whew! Seth Jarvis Clark Planetarium
Seth, Thanks for the info. I just went over and picked up a sheet. The instructions are great and should prove to be very helpful. Please also pass my thanks on to your staff. Richard Curtis
