Public Viewing of the Eclipse
Hello, Public interest in this eclipse is running high and Clark Planetarium is trying to maximize the viewing opportunities for folks who will be in Salt Lake County. Not everyone can or wants to travel south, but that doesn't mean there won't be lots of people wanting to view the eclipse, and we're anxious that they have access to safe and scientifically accurate viewing opportunities. Planetarium staff will be at The Gateway, Library Square, and Dimple Dell Recreation Center in Sandy with solar filter-equipped telescopes. Between these venues and staff taking off for southern Utah, our resources are stretched thin and we're wondering if there are any amateur astronomers who'd be willing to bring a telescope and help talk to the public about the eclipse. We especially need another scope and explainer for the Sandy location. (Dimple Dell Rec Center is at 106th South & 10th East.) I'd also like to know what other viewing opportunities are being made available to the public along the Wasatch Front so we can promote them through our Facebook, Tweets, blogs, etc. I know there's going to be eclipse viewing at the NHMU - are there others? Seth, I am one of those going to southern Utah and won't be of much help for the eclipse. But we do have the bigger, rarer event following shortly. I will be town for the Venus transit. Right now my plans are to be at the Brickyard Harmons for most of the afternoon. It's not my place to suggest it but this would be a great event for the Planetarium and SLAS to work together on. I, speaking only for myself, would love to see the Planetarium join us at the Brickyard. I am one of those going to southern Utah and won't be of much help
for the
eclipse. But we do have the bigger, rarer event following shortly.
I will be town for the Venus transit. Right now my plans are to be at the Brickyard Harmons for most of the afternoon. It's not my place to suggest it but this would be a great event for the Planetarium and SLAS to work together on. I, speaking only for myself, would love to see the Planetarium join us at the Brickyard.
Perhaps a staff member can come to the Board meeting tomorrow night. 7:00 pm at the Denny's, 5th South and 250 (or so) West, and bring it up.

Siegfried, Yes, we're planning a similar public effort for the transit on 6/5. We'd be happy to join you at the Brickyard Harmon's that afternoon. For both events I want to do everything we can to give the casually interested public a chance to experience these events.
