I was saddened by the passing of Neil Armstrong. My mother is an Armstrong, and she was once secretary to the Armstrong Surname Organization. Neil Armstrong and his parents took an interest in their family heritage. My grandpa Albert B. Armstrong was an avid amature astronomer. He headed the Arnmstrong Surname Organization. It is sad that Neil Armstrong didn't live to see humankind's return to the Moon to stay. It is also sad that he didn't live to see a July 20th Flag Day Like Space Exploration Day Holiday become official by Presidential Executive Directive. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: utah-astronomy-request@mailman.xmission.com To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Sun, 26 Aug 2012 01:14:02 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Utah-Astronomy Digest, Vol 114, Issue 92 Send Utah-Astronomy mailing list submissions to utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to utah-astronomy-request@mailman.xmission.com You can reach the person managing the list at utah-astronomy-owner@mailman.xmission.com When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Utah-Astronomy digest..." Walter Cronkite was crying. I'd never before seen a news anchor cry. Later that evening I went outside and looked up at the Moon. There were people there. I'd looked at the Moon through my (badly) homemade 3" reflector a thousand times, but now when I looked at it, there were people there. That was why Cronkite was crying. I didn't get to see it, it was still pretty dark where I was. Don't think there was a TV there either. But I did see the recreation of it at Kennedy Space Center about 10 years ago, I got pretty choked up when I heard Cronkite's voice start cracking when they were waiting to hear back from the first orbit to the far side. And really sat on the edge of my seat as Eagle kept losing radio contact and the computers kept resetting. Pretty tense times, that's for sure.

Where were you when Armstrong stepped on Moon? My eyes were fixed on the old Motorola black-and-white in the family living room. Great TV, vacuum tubes and all. Doubled as a nice accent to the room. Sometimes had to move the leaves from in front of the screen. Mom had set a big plant on top of it. Try to do that with the big-screen TVs of today. Water lightly.
