Replacement for nexstar+ handcontrol
Recently the hand controller took some damage and is no longer operational. Does anyone know of a way to calibrate a Celestron CGEM without a nexstar+ hand controller? Is it possible to hook a laptop directly up to it to calibrate and slew? Thanks for your suggestions.
I’m pretty sure the smarts are in the hand controller. There’s a serial port at the bottom of the controller—is it broken completely, or it is just the buttons/display? If it’s something non-critical, you might be able to hook into the serial port. Good luck! Dan -- Daniel Holmes, danielh@holmesonics.com "Laugh while you can, monkey boy!" -- Lord John Whorfin

It's not an immediate solution, but I believe you can find a replacement hand controller on eBay for very little money, the market seems saturated with them. I bought a couple of the smaller Celestron GoTo mounts on eBay last year, complete with hand controller, for pennies on the dollar. They work well, and the controller seems identical to the one on my own CGEM. On 11/26/15, Jeff Smith <utah-astronomy@unbiasedgeek.com> wrote:

I would caution that you get a hand control that is upgradeable as the older ones are not. 73 Sent from my iPad Begin forwarded message:

To be safe I ordered the exact same model hand controller. I plugged it in and it doesn't want to power on. There is power to the mount (the red light comes on). The HC does not power up. The mount is under warranty so I waiting to hear back from Celestron but it sounds like I will need to ship them the whole mount which is prohibitively expensive right now. Does anyone in the SL/UT county area have a Celestron CGEM mount I can test the new HC on? I want to rule that out as the point of failure. Happy days, I can't believe I missed this. The problem is my power supply. It works like a charm if I jack it directly into my car's power point. On Tue, Dec 1, 2015 at 10:17 AM, Jeff Smith <utah-astronomy@unbiasedgeek.com> wrote:

Glad you found the problem. An economical volt meter is a good thing to have in your tool kit. BTW, I run my 8i without any batteries in their compartment. They do not last very long, esp. in colder weather And, if you continue to run off a separate power source (recommended), you might find they have begun to corrode the next time you think about them. I also tie a simple knot in the PS cord while it is wrapped around the lower part of the support arm. That way you avoid putting excess strain on the end plug, as well as the connector on the base of the Nexstar. Even tho you set your mount to avoid cord wrap, this can happen. Radio Shack carried an exactly sized fitting to go on the end of your power cable, but since they are now deceased, I don't know where to look for them. I speak from experience, as I destroyed the tip on my cord--and not at the start-I had been using the scope for a couple of years when it happened. There is an excellent Nexstar resource site run by Mike Swanson, _www.nexstarsite.com_. He also offers a resource book, if you are interested, but most of the info is posted to the site. 73
Hi Larry, et al, I have no idea what the connector you are talking about looks like, but the first place I would look is at Ra-Elco, 2780 S. Main St. SLC 801-487-7749. Call for hours - they are closed during a daily 12 to 1 lunch break, I believe and open on a limited basis on Saturday. Same suggestion for anything electronic. And, no, I'm not a share holder, but I'd hate to lose that resource. Ed Stimpson ------------------------ Quoting Larry Holmes <larry@kijoda.com>:

Been using Ra-Elco as my mad scientist supply house since the mid ‘80s—used to ride my bike down there (there was a game shop a few doors down too—bought my first copy of Car Wars there). It’s one of those places that if they can find it, they have it. Matt was always my go-to guy down there, but he moved on years ago. Walked in the door one time and they were having a water fight with hoses inside the store…there’s a few boxes in the far back that still have water damage. Another time had to catch a football as I walked in, otherwise it would have taken out the rack of tape belts…ah, fun times. It is quite a place, isn't it Larry. Wasn't it that Edwards outfit up north of Ogden that had the slogan "If we don't have it, you don't need it!"? Well, I think Ra-Elco's is "If we don't have it, it's never been made!" As to the dust, I've got some of that in my jeans, too. But, oh what treasures await the inquisitive in those hallowed isles. Hi Larry, et al,
I have no idea what the connector you are talking about looks like, but the first place I would look is at Ra-Elco, 2780 S. Main St. SLC 801-487-7749. Call for hours - they are closed during a daily 12 to 1 lunch break, I believe and open on a limited basis on Saturday.
Same suggestion for anything electronic. And, no, I'm not a share holder, but I'd hate to lose that resource.

That’s funny, back when we were a research business, Ra-Elco was the place to go for anything oddball or special that we needed in electronics, and the guys that ran it knew exactly what you needed before you did, and where to find it. I never understood how they could find stuff so fast in that maze of boxes and bins and racks.

I'll second the Ra-Elco plug. If you need electronic components, they are very likely going to have it. It's a candy store for wireheads!

You wouldn't believe the stuff I have been able to get at Raelco and nowhere else. I just ask one of the guys and he'll know exactly where it is; I never could find these things myself. Go there and you'll see.
