There's something about flying through a clear, dark sky that's really special. Flying over the blackness of the West Desert with the cabin lights turned down, one's eyes dark adapted and sitting behind that wrap around windscreen with a view of uncounted hundreds of stars one can almost imagine they're flying through space. Want to track west? No need for fancy navigational devices, just point the plane's nose at Arcturus. Heading west? Then Jupiter's your guide star. Then position yourself just right at the right time and watch as a scarlet Moon rises in the east and reflects off of the Great Salt Lake far below. Really a magical experience. patrck (Now, alas, back on Terra Firma) . Sent from my iPad

Thanks Joe. No photos. I was too busy just drinking in the view. I guess you'll just have to come along one night and see for yourself. :) patrick p.s. I typoed in my original post. I meant to say "Heading east? Then Jupiter's your guide star."
No thanks! But that was a wonderful description. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, September 6, 2012 2:19 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Great moonrise On 06 Sep 2012, at 02:07, Joe Bauman wrote:
