Hey, don't pick on Kim too much. I know where he's coming from. Not to say anything one way or another about Ms. Rowling's ability as a writer, but I'm just not interested in fantasy. This is why I find Star Wars so gruesomely boring. Now if you've got good thought-provoking SF (like 'Code 46' or Gattaca'), I'm right there. Guess I'm just an old grump. --------------- The thread till now.... You are seriously underestimating JK Rowling. These are not children's books! Sorry, but if you had red them you would realize that. Until you have read them, I don't see where you can judge them. WARNING! The following is likely to offend fans of JKR and Harry Potter. I've never cared much for children's literature, even when I was a child. I've never understood the attraction the Harry Potter books have for adults. I haven't read them and don't intend to. If they're anything like the films, I definitely won't be reading the books, unless Alzheimer's or some other malady robs me of what little intellectual powers I have. (I was coerced into taking the kids to the movies.) I don't mean to belittle anyone else's interest in the literature, but what is it that others find so interesting? Now Isaac Asimov, I can understand... _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Visit the Photo Gallery: http://www.utahastronomy.com _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Visit the Photo Gallery: http://www.utahastronomy.com
Michael, what did you think of "Dhalgren" by Samuel R. Delaney? Or "Triton"? One old grump to another. BTW, I haven't read any of the Potter books, other than snippets here and there, mostly to get a handle on what was keeping my daughter so absorbed. I did finally see the first three movies on DVD recently. We had a family "Potter-thon". I'm interested enough to keep them in mind as a retirement project. --- Michael Carnes <michaelcarnes@earthlink.net> wrote:

Sorry, didn't mean to pick on anyone. I understand not liking a certain genre, but belittling people because you perceive them as uneducated, and liking something that you believe is below you is rather harsh when you don't know the subject matter. I'll pipe in to defent JKR and Harry Potter. The absolute best thing about the books, in my opinion, is the lasting, strong friendship between the three friends. The movies do not do it justice. JKR is an amazing author, it's stunning that no one would publish HP when she first wrote it. The intracacies of the story lines, the development of the characters, and the twists and turns are just wonderful. Granted, there are some slow spots, and sometimes in the beginnings of the books there not much of a point yet... but when one reads on, the story unfolds. Some say that the most recent books are darker than the first. Well, I agree. However, as a child grows and develops, and learns more of the nastiness of the world around him, the world does tend to get darker. Especially when such evil exists! Anyway.. err.. um, back to astronomy. I just can't resist a good HP discussion. LOL Cyn John and Lisa Zeigler wrote:

Lisa: Wait just a minute! I did not belittle anyone, did not imply that anyone is uneducated, and did not say that anything is below me. (My reference to Alzheimer's was not intended to poke fun at anyone but myself. As anyone who knows me can attest, I've been teetering on the brink for years.) You're reading way too much into what I wrote. What I did say is that I simply do not understand why JKR's books hold so much interest for adults. I always thought that they were written for children. Your earlier post told me a few things in this regard that I did not know. For instance, I did not know that the stories are more akin to A.C. Doyle than to, say, T. Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Thanks for enlightening me. As I wrote earlier, I'm just not interested in reading this particular genre. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John and Lisa Zeigler" <john@johnstelescopes.com> To: "'Utah Astronomy'" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 11:20 AM Subject: RE: [Utah-astronomy] Potter | Sorry, didn't mean to pick on anyone. Thanks, Kim. I understand. I am a writer wanna-be and am attempting to write a Fantasy - Sci Fi that I hope will not come with too many harsh comments, if I can get published at all. Maybe that's why I reacted so strongly. Sorry :). Lisa
