Just wondering if any other astro list members share my interest in sports cars and roadsters. I'm not talking about "point and shoot" horsepower muscle cars, but cars that go fast yet were designed for curves. Cars that were meant to be driven on the open road and enjoyed for the driving experience. Some examples would include the MG midget, the Triumph Spitfire, TR6 or TR7, Toyota 2000 GT, Jaguar XK-E series, Datsun 1600, 2000, or 240Z, Mazda RX-7, Miata, RX-8. Anybody?
Chuck I had a Porsche 1600 and BMW 2002 Tii, loved the cars, then had kids, end of story .................................. for now. aloha Rob also a TR-3 and MG-B in my early days
"Point and shoot"... nice touch! ;) Quoting Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com>:

Sounds like the second half of September if we want to see the SLK 350. Will that time frame work for others? Give people enough time to wrangle permits & stickers? It means FAST action will be required if brought before the board. Like approval at the same meeting it's suggested and scheduled right afterwards. But again, if this is too compressed I can wait for springtime. On 9/3/07, Barney B. <aaah@sisna.com> wrote:

Does totalling one count? When I was a young Marine, one of my Captains left me his TR6 to paint while he was away at Jump School. 2 nights after I painted it I had it out on the town, (Centari Acrylic Enamel with a Catalyst) top down, turning heads when I was broadsided in an intersection by a drunk. Be careful what you suggest. Someone recently suggested a star party at SPOC at 3:00 in the morning... And it happened and even got covered by the media. :)
OK, I'm formally suggesting a SLAS Concours at SPOC. Only we have to do it before Nov.1, because I am garaging my baby from November through the end of February. Actually post first-freeze would be best. I hate the bug splatter from a trip to Stansbury in pre-freeze weather. We'll make it a sun party/car show, and just to be sporting, we'll include "muscle cars" and other "specialty" vehicles if anybody has one they'd like to bring, but the emphasis is on sportsters and roadsters. I'll bring solar binos and perhpaps the ED-80 with solar filter. Boyd, start polishing-up the Tiger! On 9/2/07, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Wow! Can I bring my truck? I might even wash it. :) But seriously, the SLAS board will need to sign off if you want to make it an official SLAS event. Can you present the idea at this month's BOD meeting on Thursday the 13th?

Also because SPOC closes for the season on Halloween. patrick
I almost certainly can't make the BOD meeting. Prior commitment. Someone else with more clout than I will have to suggest it..Ann? *;o)* If no SLAS sponsorship is forthcoming, could I schedule it as a private sun party, open to all members with a sports car and/or solar telescope? Actually we don't need any SPOC telescopes for sun party/car show, so the official closing date means far less for this event (for me, anyway) than my car going under it's cover for the season (except for weekly starts & warmups)... unless "closing" SPOC means that the grounds are off-limits as well as the telescopes. Is this the case? Zoom zoom zoom! On 9/3/07, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

You know, thinking about it, there have been many, many cases of individuals and groups using the SPOC grounds off-season, with private telescopes (myself included). I think the precedent has already been set. On 9/3/07, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Would you be willing to have it on an already scheduled SPOC night, just starting well before sunset? Or how's about tying in with the fundraiser star party SLAS is already committed to at the Denny's in Tooele (for the Tooele high school athletic department) on the 19th of this month? That starts at 5 which will be well before sunset.
Actually we don't need any SPOC telescopes for sun party/car show...
Need? No, but why not try for "officialdom" first. After all, SLAS does have a very nice H-alpha scope stored at SPOC.
(except for weekly starts & warmups)...
Off topic, but you don't drive it at all during the winter!? I too am paranoid about driving my 35 year old, one-owner Benz in winter but my mechanic says to not just run it but to drive it once a month (something about seals?). So I just wait for one of those brilliantly clear and dry winter days Utah is famed for and drive it to SLC and back.
unless "closing" SPOC means that the grounds are off-limits as well as the telescopes. Is this the case?
Back on topic, I can't imagine there would be a problem parking cars around SPOC during the off season. Bruce has said he'd even unwinterize the facility for a special event if needed (I think Dave Bernson is already looking into that for this December's Mars opposition). But would you want to park on the grass around the SPOC buildings or keep them on the asphalt parking lot? patrick

At this early stage, start time and date is a good question. I have given it no serious thought yet, anything is possible. Obviously it must be at a time when attendees with cars will want to have their autos on display. Or how's about tying in with the fundraiser star party SLAS is
already committed to at the Denny's in Tooele (for the Tooele high school athletic department) on the 19th of this month? That starts at 5 which will be well before sunset.
That would require permission from Denny's, I"m guessing, in order to bring a bunch of cars onto their property. My first reaction is to stay away from the Denny's project- but who knows.

True, especially if nobody else had an H-a setup, it would be good to have. Off topic, but you don't drive it at all during the winter!? I too

My concern is road salt. My regular warmup of course includes a short drive whenever possible, if the roads are dry and clean. Otherwise its to the end of my 100-foot driveway and back a few times, and the seals will have to content themselves with that until the next opportunity. If I have a telescope set-up then it will be next to my car, wherever that is. Again this is all very preliminary and I haven't a preference yet. I have attended concourses on both pavement and lawns. Any input fom prospective attendees is most welcome. I'm just the guy with the idea, it's going to take a lot of other folks to help pull it together, if it happens this fall at all. Spring is nice, too.

The manager is a SLAS member. Considering it was he who approached SLAS about the star party there on the 19th I rather imagine he'll like a few fancy cars on the lot. I'll probably be there this evening or tomorrow. I'll see if he's interested. patrick
I have been away from work for the past 11 days and just returned today to find that I will not be able to attend any club functions on weekdays though the end of September at least. I cannot make it to Denny's on the 19th (Wednesday) before evening hours. Sorry about this, folks. Saturdays I can play during daylight, but not during the workweek for the forseeable future. But if enough of you still want to do the car show on the 19th, I need not be there. FWIW, Bruce, Boyd and I were at Denny's today. I mentioned to Ted (the manager that's also a member of SLAS) that the fancy cars will probably not be at the fundraiser. He understands and suggested maybe it could happen next year and offered to help advertise it. pw On 04 Sep 2007, at 07:17, Chuck Hards wrote:
